The 'Polar Geography' journal announces a Call for Proposals for a
special issue entitled "The Human Geography of Arctic Sea Ice." The
issue will be coordinated by guest editor Amy Lauren Lovecraft.
This special edition seeks to bring together a cross-section of work
focusing on the sea ice cycle from a perspective of human geography. For
the purposes of this journal, human geography is conceptualized as the
study of human activities in, and understandings of, a particular
social-ecological system. The articles will examine how people construct
political economies, cultures, and cartographic depictions of the
circumpolar North associated with sea ice.
Specific objectives of the special edition include:
- To explore how arctic sea ice produces a value-laden geographic
location that has a special relationship to people due to its
cyclical nature, rapidly changing characteristics, isolated
locations, interdependent ecological functions, and aesthetic
qualities.
- To encourage interdisciplinary research and communication among
social scientists studying the arctic sea ice cycle.
- To build connections between social scientists and geophysical and
biological scientists in research on human vulnerability and
adaptation in the sea ice social-ecological system.
- To critically examine private and public sector strategies to
recognize vulnerability to sea ice loss and plans for adaptation in
light of the race between the drivers diminishing ice and the human
capacity to manage them.
A complete description of the issue is available at:
http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/cfp/tpogcfp3.pdf.
The guest editor is seeking expressions of interest from primarily
social scientists, but welcoming all perspectives that seek to explore
the human use and understanding of arctic sea ice. Proposals (300-450
words) clearly demonstrating the links to the special feature purpose
and objectives should be submitted to Amy Lovecraft
(allovecraft [at] alaska.edu) no later than Thursday, 15 September 2011.
Invited full papers are expected to be 4000-8000 words (including
references) and will be accepted until 1 January 2012. Manuscripts must
be submitted online using the Manuscript Central portal, and adhere to
the guidelines described on the 'Polar Geography' website, at:
http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/journal.asp?issn=1088-937X&linktype=44.
The guest editor will provide comments and feedback on the initial
drafts by 1 March 2012. Authors can integrate this feedback into a final
submission that is due 1 May 2012. The standard peer review process of
'Polar Geography' will then follow, with a scheduled publication date of
Autumn 2012.
Proposal deadline: Thursday, 15 September 2011.
Full paper deadline: 1 January 2012.
