West Region Science Association Annual Meeting
8-11 February 2012
Kauai, Hawaii
The 51st Annual Meeting of the Western Regional Science Association
(WRSA) will be held at the Sheraton Kauai hotel in Hawaii. The
conference is scheduled 8-11 February 2012.
The WRSA meeting includes a series of Remote Regions/Northern
Development sessions to accommodate social scientists who have a special
interest in research on economic, social, political, and cultural issues
in remote, sparsely settled regions in the circumpolar north and
elsewhere. In the past, researchers from Canada, Alaska, Hawaii,
Greenland, Finland, Scandinavia, Australia, New Zealand, Micronesia,
Israel, and Russia have presented papers in these sessions, which are in
their thirtieth year.
Organizers are issuing a general call for papers from social scientists
doing research in northern and other remote regions. The organization of
special sessions is also welcome, and organizers are particularly
interested in sessions that address a particular theme from the
perspective of a number of countries or regions. Please contact Lee
Huskey (aflh [at] uaa.alaska.edu) if you are interested in organizing such a
session.
For abstract submissions, please send or email a copy of your paper by 1

27th Lowell Wakefield International Fisheries Symposium
14-17 September 2011
Anchorage, Alaska
Early registration for the 27th Lowell Wakefield International Fisheries
Symposium, entitled "Fishing People of the North: Cultures, Economies,
and Management Responding to Change," is open through 14 August 2011.
The event will be held 14-17 September 2011 in Anchorage, Alaska.
The symposium will provide a forum for scholars, fishery managers,
fishing families, and others to explore the human dimensions of fishery
systems and the growing need to include social science research in
policy processes. It will be a place for sharing knowledge about the
opportunities and constraints that fishing people in northern countries
encounter in a time of significant environmental, social, and economic
change. Diverse panels and presentations will address sources and
effects of external impacts on fishing people and their communities.
