    Tenth International Conference on Permafrost
    25-29 June 2012

Organizers of the Tenth International Conference on Permafrost announce
a call for paper titles. The conference will be held 25-29 June 2012 in
Salekhard, Russia.

For this conference, a paper is defined as a peer-reviewed article (up
to 6 pages) that will be subject to a full peer-review, and will appear
in the proceedings to be printed and distributed at the conference.
Titles are due no later than Thursday, 30 June 2011. The full papers
must then be submitted by 15 September 2011. For further instructions or

Participants will also be allowed to submit shorter Extended Abstracts
until 15 February 2012. The nature of the presentation at the conference
(oral or poster) is not dependent on the nature of the submission
(extended abstract or paper).

The International Conference on Permafrost is organized by the
International Permafrost Association every four years.

Paper title deadline: Thursday, 30 June 2011.

    Advanced Workshop on Oil Spills In Sea Ice: Past, Present,
    and Future
    20-23 September 2011

Organizers announce an advanced workshop on the physical problems
associated with oil spills and blowouts in sea ice. The workshop will be
held 20-23 September 2011 in Fermo, Italy.

Scientists, engineers, and policymakers are invited to address the
questions of how oil is emitted from a blowout or spill, how the oil and
gas are incorporated in the under-ice surface, how the oil layer
evolves, how the oil is transported by the ice, and how and where
eventual release occurs. The aim is to incorporate the experience of
those scientists who worked in this field in the 1970s-1990s, when
large-scale field experiments involving oil release were possible, and
to relate this to the needs of present researchers who are seeking
solutions to the problem of a sustainable arctic oil spill management
system. Notably, the workshop will be attended by the oil spill work
package of the European Union Arctic Climate Change and its Effect on
Economic Systems (ACCESS) project.

The meeting will be held in the Villa Vitali, home of the Zavatti
Institute. The workshop will include a full social program for delegates
and accompanying persons. A special issue of "Cold Regions Science and
Technology" has been set up for workshop papers.

    Fluid Flow in Arctic Continental Margins and Ocean Ridges

Organizers are pleased to announce a workshop entitled "Fluid Flow in
Arctic Continental Margins and Ocean Ridges." The workshop will be held
30-31 May 2011 in Tromso, Norway.

The objective of the workshop is to make sure that the science topics
for improving our understanding of fluid flow and gas hydrates in arctic
regions will meet today's science needs. The aim of this workshop is to
produce a comprehensive overview of key drilling questions and related
areas including requested technologies. This includes not only existing
technologies and necessary developments, but also best regional drilling
strategies. The outcome of the workshop will feed into a major Deep Sea
and Sub-Seafloor Frontier (DS3F) conference to be organized in
Barcelona, Spain.

The workshop will be held at the University of Tromso. A registration
fee of 100 euros will be collected onsite.

Organizers at the United Kingdom Polar Network (UKPN) announce that they
will hold another Network Day for early career scientists on 7 June 2011
from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The event will be held at the Royal
Corinthian Yacht Club in Plymouth, United Kingdom.

Network Day is taking place in connection with the Scott Centenary
weekend commemorating the centenary of the British Antarctic (Terra
Nova) Expedition, 1910-1913, led by Captain Robert Falcon Scott. It will
include presentations and discussions around the scientific legacy of
the expedition and the wealth of archives available for polar scientists
in the UK, and provide an opportunity to discover the work of UK
Antarctic Heritage Trust and to meet many other interesting early career
scientists working in all areas of polar sciences.

The keynote speaker will be Douglas Russell from the Natural History
Museum. Other speakers will include Ellen Bazeley-White (Archives
Manager from the British Antarctic Survey) and Anna Malaos (from the UK
Antarctic Heritage Trust), both of whom will discuss their work and the
resources it opens up for scientists.

Attendees are invited to bring a poster highlighting their current
research for the poster session. For those arriving early, or who have
already travelled to Plymouth for the Polar Science Conference on 6 June
2011, organizers hope to arrange a trip to the National Marine Aquarium
in the morning.
