The Department of Arctic Biology at the University Centre in Svalbard
(UNIS) seeks candidates for the position of full or associate professor
in Arctic Terrestrial Ecology, with competence in energy flow/trophic
levels. The position will be based in Longyearbyen, Svalbard, Norway.
The research will be within the scope of the Department of Arctic
Biology at UNIS, and possibilities for research collaboration with the
terrestrial staff members in particular, but also the department as a
whole, will be emphasized. The field of expertise of all applicants will
be evaluated in relation to the existing plans and research profiles of
the department.
The appointed person is expected to take an active role in the
advancement of his/her field of research and to strengthen the
terrestrial course portfolio, especially at the graduate level. The
appointed person is expected to participate in the supervision of
Master's and PhD students in cooperation with the other universities.
The person will also be responsible for two undergraduate or
postgraduate courses.

The Division of Geography, Department of Geosciences and Geography at
the University of Helsinki seeks applications to an assistant
professorship in spatial environmental research. The position is
tenure-track, and will be based in Helsinki, Finland.
The successful candidate is expected to conduct research on a high
international level. The appointee must take advantage of national and
international research funding opportunities, participate in teaching
and doctoral education at the department, and be active in the
interaction between science and society at large. The department places
particular weight on documented research in the physical-chemical
processes of aquatic and terrestrial environments or ecosystem research.
The department houses well-equipped, functional laboratories, which the
assistant professor is expected to support in his or her research.

curriculum vitae, a list of publications, a report on experience and
qualifications which are relevant in the evaluation of teaching skills,
as well as other relevant documents; or by an English-language academic
portfolio including the previously mentioned documents and the necessary

3-5 Postdoctoral Positions and 3-5 PhD Positions
The new Nordic Centre of Excellence Tundra (NCoE Tundra) seeks
applicants to fill positions available on a variety of work packages.
The duration of all positions will be two years, with an option for a
two-year extension.
The scope of NCoE Tundra is to study the interaction between the
ecological phenomenon of top down impacts in food webs and
climate-vegetation interactions, and to integrate this perspective with
man-managed reindeer husbandry and the Sami culture dependent on it. The
ultimate goal is to learn how the top-down impact of reindeer can be
optimally applied to the prevention of shrub encroachment and woodland
expansion, and the resulting negative impacts of these processes on
global climate and biodiversity. NCoE Tundra will approach the system of
ecologic, climatologic, and socio-economic issues by means of an
integrated, co-Nordic Center of Excellence project, gathering young
specialists already working on different aspects of the above problem
into an integrated Co-Nordic team.
The eight work packages have the following focus sectors:
- Predation and the dynamics of arctic-alpine food webs;
- Impact of vertebrate herbivory on tundra vegetation;
- Impact of grazing on the dynamics of rare arctic-alpine plants;
- Moth-reindeer-birch dynamics in northernmost Fennoscandia;
- Large scale impacts of herbivory on vegetation;
- Ecology and socio-economy of reindeer herding systems;
- Interaction between vegetation and climate; and
- Abiotic processes, spatial information (GIS), synthesis and policy
recommendations.

indication of the preferred work package, a curriculum vitae including a
list of publications, and the names and contact information
