1. Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory seeks Postdoctoral Scientists
   Seismology and Geodesy

The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University invites
applications for up to six full-time postdoctoral research scientist
positions in Seismology and Geodesy. The positions will be based in
Palisades, New York.

The successful applicants will work with investigators of the seismology
and geodesy groups on one or more of the following projects:

- Analysis and interpretation of diverse onshore and offshore
active-source seismic data to investigate deformation and magmatism
at active and ancient plate boundaries, including a targeted study
of the Alaska/Aleutian subduction zone;
- Development and implementation of methods for imaging crust and
upper-mantle structure from broadband arrays and modeling of results
in terms of physical properties. Focus is on the dynamics driving
subduction in Alaska, uplift and rifting in Papua New Guinea, the
deep structure and evolution of volcanic arcs, and the evolution of
the Pacific plate;
- Exploitation of data from the Global Seismographic Network and the
USArray component of EarthScope for the purpose of improved
characterization of earthquake sources and the development of
next-generation tomographic images of the Earth's interior; and
- Interdisciplinary geodetic studies, including an analysis of tidal
resonance using a global set of GPS data, a multidisciplinary study
of the impact of climate change on the solid Earth and oceans,
innovative geodetic methods applied to glaciology and other branches
of the geosciences, and improvements in geodetic accuracy and
analysis techniques.

Candidates must have a PhD in a related field. Experience in computer
programming is highly preferred, as is research experience directly
relevant to the research activities.

2. University Centre in Svalbard seeks Professor
   Chemical Oceanography

The University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS) seeks candidates for the
position of Professor/Associate Professor in Chemical Oceanography. The
position will be based in Longyearbyen, Svalbard, Norway.

The position is intended to further strengthen and extend the
cooperation within the Air-Chryosphere-Sea Interaction Observation and
Modelling (ACSO) group, and between UNIS and national and international
partners. This new scientific position will add the important branch of
chemical oceanography to the existing department research by introducing
the use of tracers to improve understanding of ocean mixing (isopycnal
and diapycnal mixing), ocean circulation and residence time in the ocean
(thermohaline circulation), and the sensitivity of the climate system.
There is an urgent need to understand the role of oceans in relation to
modulating sources and sinks of anthropogenic CO2, the role of
biogeochemical processes, and the changes in carbon sources and sinks
and their interaction with climactic changes. Hence, boundary layer
dynamics and air-ice-sea interaction studies are needed to improve this
knowledge.

The successful candidate will conduct research within the scope of the
Department of Arctic Geophysics at UNIS and is expected to participate
in the supervision of Master's and PhD students in cooperation with the
other universities. The person will also be responsible for one or two
undergraduate or postgraduate courses.

Applicants must have a PhD or the equivalent in a related field, and
should have experience in fieldwork in arctic conditions and be able to
team up with physical oceanographers and meteorologists. To apply for

3. University of Alaska Fairbanks seeks Postdoctoral Scientist
   Boreal Ecosystem Dynamics
   Fairbanks, Alaska

The Institute of Arctic Biology at the University of Alaska Fairbanks
seeks applications for a postdoctoral scientist to conduct modeling
studies part of a project entitled "Identifying indicators of state
change and forecasting future vulnerability in Alaskan boreal
ecosystems." The position will be based in Fairbanks, Alaska.

The successful candidate will conduct studies that include the
development, parameterization, testing, analysis, and application of
models that simulate the vegetation and carbon dynamics of boreal forest
ecosystems in Alaska.

Applicants must have a PhD degree (already received or awaiting receipt
with all requirements fulfilled). Training in earth system science or
biogeochemistry is required. Research experience in modeling vegetation
dynamics or biogeochemistry is required, and skills in data analysis and
