  1. World Wildlife Fund seeks Marine Biologist
    Arctic Field Program

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) seeks a marine biologist for its arctic
field program in the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas. The position is
full-time and is based in Anchorage, Alaska.

The marine biologist will develop links between communities, scientists,
and WWF teams on both sides of the maritime boundary between the U.S.
and Canada in the Beaufort Sea; provide scientific leadership to a
spatial planning project in the region; and will use current information
and research on arctic species, climate change impacts, and related
issues to inform and support WWF arctic team policy and communications
efforts. Specific responsibilities of the position will include:

- Conducting outreach activities to engage arctic communities in
assessing and understanding threats to the marine systems in the
Beaufort and Chukchi Seas;
- Evaluating the impacts of oil and gas exploration, and other human
activity, on trans-boundary wildlife populations; and
- Supporting WWF advocacy efforts related to legislative and
regulatory reform of offshore oil and gas exploration and resource
development.

Minimum requirements for this position include an advanced degree (PhD
preferred) or equivalent work experience in marine biology, natural
resources management, or spatial planning and marine studies. A minimum
of six years extensive experience working with Alaska marine ecosystems
and cultures is also required. The ideal candidate will have proven
experience managing interdisciplinary projects, effective communication
skills, and experience working in spatial planning and the oil and gas
industry.

  1. North Pacific Research Board seeks Program Manager
    Marine Research
    Anchorage, Alaska

The North Pacific Research Board (NPRB) seeks candidates for the
position of program manager. The duration of the initial appointment
will be two years with the possibility of an extension. The anticipated
start date is 1 June 2011. This is a full-time position and is located
in Anchorage, Alaska.

This position is responsible for managing the Gulf of Alaska Integrated
Ecosystem Research Program (also known as the Gulf of Alaska Project).
The program manager will also help develop and coordinate a potential
new NPRB initiative in the Arctic. The successful candidate must be
willing to travel. Specific duties include:

- Project management responsibilities such as overseeing budgets,
timelines, programmatic elements, report development, and scientific
synthesis and coordination;
- Working with the Science Director, Executive Director, and NPRB
staff to develop a potential NPRB arctic initiative;
- Providing support science administration of regular NPRB research
projects;
- Attending NPRB board and committee meetings; and
- Helping prepare annual scientific reports on NPRB programs.

The G.C. Rieber Climate Institute at the Nansen Environmental and Remote
Sensing Center (NERSC) seeks candidates for a postdoctoral fellowship
position in the Planetary Boundary Layer Feedback (PBL-feedback)
research project. The position is open for two years starting 1 April
2011, with possible extension, and is located in Bergen, Norway.

The PBL-feedback project objective is to understand and quantify the
role of vertical turbulent mixing in the earth's climate system; to
understand the planetary boundary layer (PBL) climatology in cold
climates; and to use statistical methods and conceptual process models
to search for a PBL-feedback signature in the collected data.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the data base and
statistical analysis in the project, and must have advanced knowledge of
mathematics, statistical methods, and computer tools including MATLAB
and familiarity with FORTRAN, GrADS, CCM-CAM5, and meteorological
single-column models. The position will be involved in a large
international collaboration within the European Advanced Research Grant
PBL-PMES, and must have strong verbal and writing skills in the English
language.
