The National Ocean Council (NOC) of the U.S. Federal Government is
seeking comments from the general public on the development of strategic
action plans to implement ocean policy. One of the nine priority
objectives is the Arctic Ocean. Comments can be submitted through 29
April 2011, via the web form available at:
http://www.whitehouse.gov/administration/eop/oceans/comment.
Details on the nine priority objectives can be found in the "Final
Recommendations of the Interagency Ocean Policy Task Force" document
(pages 28-40), which is available online for PDF download:
http://www.whitehouse.gov/files/documents/OPTF_FinalRecs.pdf. In order
to better inform the preparation of the strategic action plans, the NOC
is specifically requesting responses to the following questions:
- What near-term, mid-term, and long-term actions would most
effectively help the Nation achieve this policy objective?
- What are some of the major obstacles to achieving this objective;
are there opportunities this objective can further, including
transformative changes in how we address the stewardship of the
oceans, coasts, and Great Lakes?
- What milestones and performance measures would be most useful for
measuring progress toward achieving this priority objective?
The NOC plans to release the draft strategic action plans in the summer
of 2011, at which time there will be additional opportunity for public
comments.
Submission deadline: 29 April 2011.
