ICARP II will take place 10-12 November 2005 in Copenhagen, Denmark. The
goal of the ICARP II planning process is to prepare arctic research
plans to guide international cooperation over the next 10-15 years.
A comprehensive pre-conference research planning process has been
ongoing for the last 18 months engaging over 140 scientists in the
preparation of twelve draft research plans. These plans address critical
research needs, gaps in knowledge, and requirements for long-term
observations, some of which are identified in the recently released
Arctic Climate Impact Assessment and Arctic Human Development Report.
The research plans are now available on the ICARP II website
(http://www.icarp.dk)
and comments are welcome. The Conference will bring
together senior and young scholars, policy experts, arctic indigenous
and other residents, science and land managers, and funding agencies to
discuss and extend the draft plans taking special note of the problems,
priorities, and concerns of those who live in or near the Arctic.
Conference participants will be asked to take an active role in the
planning process.
There are many opportunities for those interested in the Arctic to
influence the course of scientific research, but participation in ICARP
II will be one of the most effective ways to have your voice heard and
to make an impact on the direction of arctic research for the coming
decade.
The outcome of ICARP II will complement ongoing national and
international programmes and planned major initiatives, such as the
International Polar Year, in order to guide international cooperation
over the next decade of change in the Arctic.
Abstracts for poster presentations should be mailed to icarp [at] dpc.dk
before Saturday, 1 October 2005.
The Conference will also host an Open Forum as an opportunity for
participants to propose a forward-looking research theme not covered by
ICARP II working groups. Such a theme should cover an important issue
not properly addressed otherwise, be circum-arctic in scope, and have
potential for becoming a circum-arctic research project. A summary of an
Open Forum theme must be submitted to the ICARP II secretariat
(icarp [at] dpc.dk) by Saturday, 1 October 2005.
A large number of leading arctic organizations are supporting ICARP II
as sponsors and patrons.
