The Department of Geophysics at the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS)
invites applications for a Ph.D. position in Middle Atmospheric Physics.
UNIS is a state-owned limited company. Four of Norway's mainland
universities are represented on the board. UNIS is located in a modern
facility in Longyearbyen, Svalbard, well supplied with both technical
and scientific equipment and laboratories. The institution has access to
infrastructure for both marine and terrestrial field research on
Svalbard. The studies at UNIS are marketed internationally, and all
classes are offered in English. In 2004, students from 24 countries were
represented at UNIS.
The vacant position is part of the Department of Geophysics which has
the responsibility of the daily operations of the Auroral Station in
Adventdalen, Svalbard. The optical station is important for the ongoing
research and teaching in both middle and upper atmosphere at UNIS, and
should form the basis for the Ph.D. research work for the successful
candidate.
The announced Ph.D. project should focus on the middle atmosphere and
its interactions with both the lower and upper atmosphere. The candidate
is expected to contribute and quality control the 25-year mesospheric
temperature record from the Auroral Station in Adventdalen, constituting
one of the longest time series of airglow spectra in the word. The
candidate should be competent in the use of optical instrumentation.
He/She is, in that context, also expected to participate in ongoing
programs for investigating the middle atmosphere by other
instrumentation such as, for example, radars, artificial electron
heating, lidars, and rockets. The candidate should also be prepared to
contribute to the ongoing operations at the Auroral Station.
It would be beneficial if the candidate has knowledge of at least one
programming language, as well as windows and UNIX operating systems.
Furthermore, the applicant's background from previous work on Svalbard
and other arctic regions will be stressed. It is important that the
candidate has the ability to work independently, has a positive
attitude, and is flexible. In order to be considered for the position,
the successful candidate must hold a M.Sc. in a field related to the
above-described project. Norwegian students are encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate will be based at UNIS. He/she is expected to
contribute actively in ongoing scientific activities at the department.
The Ph.D. student is also expected to take an active part in the
advancement of his/her field of research, and he/she must also be
willing to contribute to the development of UNIS in a more general
sense.
Potential candidates are encouraged to contact faculty staff member Dr.
Fred Sigernes (fred.sigernes [at] unis.no) and Adjunct Professor Dr. Ove
Havnes (Ove.Havnes [at] phys.uit.no) for further information and discussion
of the project prior to applying.
An expert committee appointed by the director of UNIS will evaluate the
qualifications of the applicants. The committee will review the
applications in detail. The appointment will be made by the Board of
Directors based on the recommendation from the director of UNIS.
To apply, please submit three copies of:
- academic records,
- curriculum vitae (including a full list of publications and previously
held grants), and
- a project description including a tentative time schedule.
