The School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences is seeking a qualified
Research Technician to act as Project Manager for the regional portion
of an international biodiversity project. This position will require
both lab and field work. The lab portion includes organization,
management, and supervision of a benthic sorting lab, training of new
students and other workers in the project, data entry and processing,
report writing, and communicating problems to the Principle
Investigator's. The position also requires a significant portion of
field work in the summers, which entails both intertidal and subtidal
sampling of invertebrates and macroalgae. The applicant must be willing
to participate in lengthy field trips.

The candidate must have integral knowledge of laboratory techniques used
for sorting benthic invertebrates and algae (including being able to
identify most invertebrates to the family level and macroalgae to the
general level). Knowledge of data collection procedures (intertidal and
subtidal), data entry and manipulation in computerized spreadsheets and
databases is required. Also needed is the ability to interpret data
results for reporting and the ability to manage activities of a research
laboratory.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The candidate must have earned a Bachelors degree (BS) in a field
related to marine biology or biological oceanography and have a minimum
of 1 year post-BS advanced training in field and laboratory situations.
The candidate must have a scientific diver certification according to
AAUS standards and extensive cold water diving experience (preferably a
Dive Master with a Dry Suit Certification). Outstanding invertebrate
zoology knowledge and microscopic identification of invertebrates of
major phyla to the family level are required. Required skills also
include extensive experience in macroalgal taxonomy and ecology with the
ability to recognize common algae to the general level.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Master's Degree is preferred. Experience in working from small vessels
is beneficial. Desired skills are high familiarity with computer
programs such as Excel, statistic program SAS, and organizing large data
sets for geo-referenced database. Also desirable are outstanding written
and oral communication skills, and fluent written and oral skills in
English and at least one other language.
