Dear Arctic Scientist,
The Global Directory of Marine (and Freshwater) Professionals (GLODIR)
is a database developed and maintained by the Intergovernmental
Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC), containing information on
individuals involved in all aspects of Marine or Freshwater Research
and Management. It is intended to be a tool for scientists, policy
makers, and anyone who needs to contact a marine or freshwater
professional. A "professional" is defined as a person who, through
his/her job, has expertise related to the research and management of
the aquatic environment.
The GLODIR is a product developed in 1997 under the auspices of the
IODE's Group of Experts on Marine Information Management (GE-MIM).
GLODIR is a free product but can be used only for nonprofit purposes.
It is important to note that the Directory is NOT used for any
promotional or commercial purpose: it is simply a service developed
by the aquatic science community for the benefit of the aquatic
science community. We often receive requests from commercial and even
non-commercial sources asking us for email lists to distribute
information on a conference, product, etc. We never give permission
as we all receive too much unsolicited email already.
What information is included in GLODIR?
GLODIR contains detailed information on individuals. This includes:
- Surname (+ First name)
- Job Title, Job Type
- Organization, Organization's Acronym, Department, Organization Type
- Address, City, State, Country, Phone, fax, email, URL
- Description of activities (keywords)
- Environment (marine, freshwater, brackishwater)
- Geographic Descriptors relevant to activities
- ASFA Subject Descriptors (grouping of professionals into subject areas)
- List of most recent and/or most important scientific papers (up to 10)
As an individual professional you are welcome to add your information
to the database. When you create your record you will be asked to
create a userID and password. These will be essential to edit your
record later. If you haven't made any changes to your record in a
year; then, once a year, GLODIR will send you an email inviting you
to update your record. You forgot your userID and password? No
problem: it will be included in the email. As is the case for any
directory, the quality and comprehensiveness of GLODIR depends on the
accuracy of its information. This can only be assured by YOU.
We would therefore like to invite you to enter your information in
GLODIR and thus become part of a family of over 10,000 scientists in
nearly 200 countries.
