The University of Saskatchewan Northern Plant Ecology Lab (NPEL) in the
Department of Biology seeks candidates for a postdoctoral position in
boreal forest plant and ecosystem ecology. The position will be based in
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.

Research will focus on landscape interactions of disturbance and
succession, plant-soil interactions, and/or plant invasion and migration
ecology in the boreal forests of Alaska, Yukon, and Saskatchewan.
Specific research topics will depend on the applicant's skills,
interests, and fit with existing projects in the NPEL.

Successful candidates should have demonstrated expertise in some of the
following: dendrochronology, simulation modeling, advanced statistics,
manipulative field experiments, nutrient cycling, and soil microbial
ecology. Applicants are expected to be self-motivated and capable of
working with an interdisciplinary team, and to have skills and interest
in mentoring graduate and undergraduate students.

The position is open until filled however applicants able to start in
May-September 2012 may have an advantage. The position will be funded
for one year with renewal of a second year dependent on performance and
funding.

  1. CliC and NPI seek Executive Officer
    Climate and Cryosphere International Project Office
    Tromso, Norway

The Climate and the Cryosphere (CliC) Project and the Norwegian Polar
Institute (NPI) seek applicants for the position of Executive Officer of
the CliC International Project Office. The position is permanent and is
located in Tromso, Norway.

Position responsibilities include planning and preparation of CliC
meetings and events, compilation of documents, plans, and reports;
communication and outreach; ensuring the timely flow of pertinent
information through the project newsletter, website, publications, and
other means; maintenance of the project's website; and managing the
project budget.

The CliC International Project Office serves as an extension of the
World Climate Research Programme's Joint Planning Staff and is based at
the Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI) in Tromso, Norway. The CliC
Executive Officer is a member of the NPI's research department staff and
reports to the Director of CliC. The Executive Officer is expected to
integrate with and actively interact with the cryosphere research
community at NPI for mutual scientific benefit.

The successful candidate is expected to have a relevant higher
education, as well as:

  • A broad interest in the fields of climate and the cryosphere;
  • The ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of project
    stakeholders,
  • Fluency in English (the ability to work in other languages,
    particularly Norwegian, will be an advantage);
  • Experience managing project budgets, planning meetings and events, and
    managing websites;
  • Communication and outreach experience through multiple forms of media
    (e.g., print, web, video); and
  • Readiness to work with national and international sources and
    associated processes for funding scientific programs and technical
    projects.

The position is open as a permanent position at NPI. The successful
applicant will be expected to commence duties as early as possible. Some
national and international travel will be required.

  1. Norwegian Polar Institute seeks Atmospheric Physicist
    Atmospheric Monitoring Program
    Tromso, Norway

The Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI) Research Department, Oceans and Sea
Ice Section seeks applicants for a research scientist in atmospheric
physics. The position is permanent and is located in Tromso, Norway.

The successful candidate will be responsible for running and developing
NPI's ongoing atmospheric monitoring program at the Sverdrup research
station located in Ny-Alesund on Spitsbergen in the Svalbard
archipelago, and for developing a program at the Troll research station
in Antarctica. The monitoring program includes solar short wave and
long-wave radiation, surface spectral albedo, spectral UV-radiation,
aerosols, and basic meteorological data. The candidate is also expected
to contribute to the Ice, Climate, and Ecosystems (ICE) Centre programs
with research focusing on interaction, energy and mass fluxes between
the atmosphere, snow, sea ice, and the ocean. Collaboration with snow,
sea ice, and ocean scientists at the NPI and partner institutes will be
an important element in the work.

The successful candidate will have earned a PhD in physics or in a
closely related atmospheric science field with a strong physics
background. Knowledge of optical radiation measurements and process
studies, and a general interest in polar climate research, is required.
Knowledge and experience of relevant instrumentation, and a strong
background in aspects concerning atmosphere-ice-ocean interaction are
required. NPI seeks a scientist who has a strong commitment to
collaborative problem solving, the interest and understanding to work
internationally and across disciplines, and a strong interest to further
develop the atmospheric science programs in Ny-Alesund, in Antarctica,
and under ICE. A documented publication record and ability to secure
external research grants is expected. Experience with arctic and/or
Antarctic fieldwork is a requirement. A professional national and
international network will be regarded as important. The candidate is
expected to participate in fieldwork and is expected to spend time on
NPI's research stations and research vessel.

The University of Groningen, Faculty of Arts seeks a professor of Arctic
and Antarctic Studies. The professor will also be the Director of the
Arctic Centre. The position is permanent and is located in Groningen,
Netherlands.

The successful candidate will direct and control the content of polar
research and teaching. In consideration of the research strengths of the
Arctic Centre, which is part of the Groningen Institute for Archaeology,
the preference is for someone who conducts research from a
cultural-historical angle. The successful candidate will have a high
international profile, as proven by publications and successful grant
applications. The successful candidate is expected to encourage and
stimulate the other members of the Arctic Centre.

The successful candidate must have a PhD in a relevant research area;
