- Introductory Meeting
Arctic Climate System Network
Monday, 23 April 2012 at 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Montreal, Canada
An introductory Arctic Climate System Network (ACSNet) meeting will be
held during the 2012 IPY Conference in Montreal, Canada. The meeting
will convene Monday, 23 April 2012 at 5:30-7:30 p.m. in room 515C of the
Palais des congres de Montreal.
ACSNet is an International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) cross-cutting
initiative to advance an intensive study of the arctic climate system,
with emphasis in the Western Arctic. ACSNet aims to provide
opportunities for scientists to increase their scope of research and to
stimulate an integrated cross-disciplinary study of the Canada Basin and
boundary regions by bringing together a broad range of international
field projects spanning atmosphere, ocean, and sea-ice studies.
The goal of the meeting will be to set a course for activities under
ACSNet that would promote and strengthen international,
interdisciplinary research collaborations in the Western Arctic.
Organizers invite all interested researchers with planned or ongoing
field activities in the Canada Basin and boundary regions to attend.

- Session Announcement and Call for Abstracts
Social, Cultural, and Environmental Implications for Inuit of
Extractive Industries
18th Inuit Studies Conference
24-28 October 2012
Washington, D.C.
Organizers of a session entitled "Social, Cultural, and Environmental
Implications for Inuit of Extractive Industries" announce a call for
abstracts. The session will be convened at the 18th Inuit Studies
Conference, scheduled for 24-28 October 2012 in Washington, D.C.
Papers in this session focus on the social, cultural, and environmental
implications for Inuit of extractive industries. How are social,
cultural, and environmental implications addressed in the process of
project approval? What works? What needs to change? What role has Inuit
Qaujimajatuqangit (traditional knowledge) played in hearing and
assessment processes to date? Can extractive industries be reconciled
with Inuit as a land-based hunting culture whose norms, practices,
beliefs, identity, and social organization has, historically, been tied
to the integrity of arctic landscapes and wildlife populations.
Anyone interested in submitted an abstract to the session should contact
Sylvie Blangy (sblangy [at] gmail.com) no later than Sunday, 15 April 2012.

- Meeting Announcement and Call for Presentations
8th Annual Polar Technology Conference
3-5 April 2012
Fairlee, Vermont
Organizers announce that the 8th Annual Polar Technology Conference will
be held 3-5 April 2012 at the Lake Morey Resort in Fairlee, Vermont. The
meeting is co-hosted by the Dartmouth College Institute of Arctic
Sciences and the Ice Drilling Program Office at Dartmouth's Thayer
School of Engineering.
The primary purpose of this conference is to bring together polar
scientists and technology developers in a forum to exchange information
on research system operational needs and technology solutions that have
been successful in polar environments. This exchange of knowledge helps
to address issues of design, implementation, and deployment for systems
that are to achieve their research goals in the Polar Regions.
Presentations in all technology fields are invited. Regular oral
presentations and a poster session will be scheduled. Discussions on
intra- and international cooperation in site deployment and maintenance
are encouraged.
A fee of $150 for all 3 days or $60/day will be collected to cover
conference expenses, coffee breaks, and lunch each day. A hosted banquet
is planned for Wednesday evening. Graduate students may be eligible for
a reduced rate of $5/day. A hosted banquet is planned for Wednesday
