The abstract submission deadline for the 2013 Arctic Science Summit Week
(ASSW) has been extended to Wednesday, 16 January 2013. The meeting is
entitled "The Arctic Hub - Regional and Global Perspectives," and will
be held 13-19 April 2013 in Krakow, Poland.

ASSW is an annual gathering of international organizations engaged in
supporting and facilitating arctic research. Its purpose is to provide
opportunities for international coordination, collaboration, and
cooperation in all fields of arctic science and to combine science and
management meetings.

The 2013 ASSW will include the three-day science symposium. The
symposium will include disciplinary sessions such as atmosphere
processes and global climate connections, cryospheric changes, marine
processes and variability, terrestrial ecosystem responses to
environmental stressors, and the impact of global changes on arctic
society. Topics for cross-cutting sessions include arctic people and
resources (opportunities, challenges, and risks); applying local and
traditional knowledge to better understanding of the changing arctic;
arctic system science for regional and global sustainability; and the
changing north (predictions and scenarios).

be held in Helsinki, Finland on 7-12 April 2014, and will include the

    Third Forum for Young Permafrost Scientists
    24 June -13 July 2013
    Yakutsk, Russia

The Melnikov Permafrost Institute announces that the Third Forum for
Young Permafrost Scientists will be held 24 June - 13 July 2013 in
Yakutsk, Russia.

The forum will include the Geocryological Conference held in Yakutsk
from 24-27 June 2013 and the Field Workshop in the southern Verkhoyansk
Mountains from 29 June to 13 July 2013. Young researchers--including
undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows--are invited
to attend. Forum themes include:

- Regional and historical geocryology
- Thermal regime of cryolythozone
- Periglacial processes and forms
- Landscape dynamics in permafrost regions
- Permafrost geochemistry
- Permafrost hydrology and hydrogeology
- Climate change and permafrost evolution
- Greenhouse gases and gas hydrates
- Permafrost microbiology
- Remote sensing of permafrost
- Stability of engineering structures on permafrost

    43rd International Arctic Workshop
    11-13 March 2013

Organizers announce a call for abstracts for the 43rd International
Arctic Workshop. It will be held 11-13 March 2013 in Amherst,
Massachusetts.

The workshop is an annual gathering for international researchers to
present work on any aspect of high-latitude environments (past, present,
and future). Organizers strive for a relaxed, friendly, and interactive
experience, fostered in part by the workshop's relatively small size.
Researchers are invited to present their very latest research; the
abstract deadline is just a few weeks before the workshop. Student
participation is strongly encouraged, with partial support available to
those making presentations (limited number of slots).

The meeting is open to all interested in the Arctic, and will consist of
a series of talks and poster sessions covering all aspects of
high-latitude environments. Previous Arctic Workshops have included
presentations on arctic and Antarctic climate, archeology, environmental
geochemistry, geomorphology, hydrology, glaciology, soils, ecology,
oceanography, quaternary history, and more. A traditional strength of
the Workshop has been arctic paleoenvironments.

    Passive Microwave Sea Ice Concentration
    18-19 February 2013
    Copenhagen, Denmark

Organizers announce that the 2nd International Workshop on Passive
Microwave Sea Ice Concentration will take place 18-19 February 2013. It
will be convened at the Danish Meteorological Institute in Copenhagen,
Denmark, and is sponsored by the European Space Agency (ESA), the WCRP
Climate and Cryosphere (CliC) Project Office, and the Danish
Meteorological Institute.

Sea ice concentration from satellite microwave radiometry is the primary
source of information on the annual sea ice extent minimum as well as a
large variety of other properties of the large-scale sea ice cover of
the Earth. For this workshop, organizers invite scientists developing
and/or applying algorithms to derive sea ice concentration to
participate in discussions of mutual interest. The theme of the workshop
will be passive microwave sea ice concentration algorithm
inter-comparison and validation, and participants will deal with topics
such as algorithm inter-comparison, ice concentration validation in
different regions and seasons, establishment of a common open validation
database, and new algorithm developments including fusion of microwave
radiometer data with other data sources.

Organizers encourage participants to register their participation by
emailing Leif Toudal Pedersen (ltp [at] dmi.dk) as soon as possible, and no
later than Sunday, 20 January 2013. The email should include a tentative
presentation title for work related to the above topics.
