The Department of Geography at George Washington University (GWU) seeks
to hire a postdoctoral researcher on research pertaining to arctic
environments. The position will be based in Washington, D.C.

The successful applicant will work within the Center for Urban and
Environmental Research (CUER) on multiple funded projects addressing
sustainability and vulnerability of arctic natural and human
environments. The position is aimed at providing field, quantitative,
and analytical support for these projects; and is expected to actively
seek external funding to expand GWU arctic and geospatial research.
Additional responsibilities for this position include teaching one
course per year in the applicant's research specialty.

Candidates should have skills with geospatial techniques including
geographic information studies (GIS), remote sensing, and/or spatial
statistics. Experience in permafrost and ecosystem modeling is a plus.

  1. NSIDC seeks Postdoctoral Fellow
    Arctic Social Science Data Curation

The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) seeks a postdoctoral
fellow for a position in arctic social science data curation. The
position will be based in Boulder, Colorado.

NSIDC is expanding its data management capabilities into new disciplines
beyond the geosciences. To help address this expanding scope, NSIDC, in
collaboration with the Council on Library and Information Resources
(CLIR), has created a two-year postdoctoral fellowship to expand its
capabilities in managing arctic social science data. The successful
applicant will work with professional data scientists and curators at
multiple organizations as well as the broader arctic research community
to enhance and expand data management services that formally preserve
arctic data and make them available to diverse audiences in integrative
ways. The position will conduct active research on how social science is
actually conducted in order to develop requirements for effective
management of social science data. A Science and Technologies
(STS)-based research approach is preferred.

Required qualifications include:

- A completed PhD in social science, data curation, or informatics
by the time the position begins;
- Knowledge of and experience in data management and stewardship,
including digital preservation issues, concepts, and practices;
- Experience with large-scale storage systems, databases, and
digital libraries;
- Knowledge and skills with methods of data representation and
interoperability; and
- Familiarity with common social science data formats and
visualization and analysis tools;

    Abiotic Processes, GIS, Synthesis and Policy Recommendations

The University of Turku seeks to fill a postdoctoral researcher position
for a project entitled 'Abiotic processes, spatial information (GIS),
synthesis and policy recommendations.' The position will be based in
Turku, Finland.

The project is under the aegis of the Nordic Centre of Excellence (NCoE)
Tundra project, 'How to preserve the tundra in a warming climate.' The
successful applicant is expected to synthesize social and ecological
information and analyze these with sophisticated GIS methodology.

A successfully completed doctoral degree (in the past five years) within
the field of geography or equivalent is a prerequisite. Furthermore,
interests and abilities within interdisciplinary research collaboration
are emphasized. A strong background in combining natural and societal
topics, preferably with a northern dimension and involving Indigenous
people, is required. Methodological skills in the field of
geoinformatics (GIS) are an essential requirement, and remote sensing
skill is a bonus.

  1. Arctic Centre seeks Senior Impact Assessment Expert
    Development of the Arctic
    Rovaniemi, Finland

The Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland seeks a senior impact
assessment expert for a project entitled "Strategic Environmental Impact
Assessment of Development of the Arctic." The position will be based in
Rovaniemi, Finland.

The successful applicant will be responsible for the leading,
implementation, coordination, and quality assurance of Work Package 2:
Impact Assessment Process, which aims to assess the impacts of
development in the Arctic and of EU policies affecting the arctic region
on the political, economic, and environmental landscapes.

Applicants must have a Master's or PhD in economy or regional planning,
social or environmental studies, or a related field. A minimum of 5
years of senior level impact assessment, management, policy-analysis or
related experience is required, as is 3 years experience relevant to
assessment of regional, social, or environmental and political
development trends in the arctic region.

    Arctic Shipping Through Challenging Waters
    Tromso, Norway

The University of Tromso seeks a PhD candidate for the project "Arctic
Shipping Through Challenging Waters." The position will be based in
Tromso, Norway.

The particular aim of the legal part of the project is to study the role
of the coastal states in regulating shipping, with a particular emphasis
on the Russian legislation and regulatory practice concerning
international shipping and its relationship with international law. In
addition, a more general study on Russian legal theory and the Arctic
would be welcome.

Applicants must have a Master's degree in law or foreign equivalent. The
successful applicant must fulfill the requirements for admission to the
faculty's PhD program. Proficiency in English is required, as well is an
understanding of Norwegian or a commitment to participate in Norwegian
language courses. Russian skills are considered advantageous.
