Mobility of Unfrozen Water in Frozen Soil

The Institute of Northern Engineering at the University of Alaska Fairbanks
seeks a PhD student for a project entitled 'Mobility of Unfrozen Water in
Frozen Soil.' The position will be based in Fairbanks, Alaska.
The project is sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF), and will
use a combination of state-of-the-art measurement techniques to quantify
relationships among key variables in soil freezing and thawing processes,
namely unfrozen water content and mobility, soil zeta potential, and soil
micro-fabric. Results from this research will improve understanding of how
frozen ground behaves as it interacts with thermal changes in the
surrounding environment.
Priority will be given to candidates who have a B.S. or M.Sc. degree in
engineering or physical science; and experience with (or strong interest
in) soils, physical chemistry, surface chemistry, and various measurement
techniques. Applications will be reviewed upon receipt, and accepted until
1 March 2013.

- University of Manitoba seeks Two Postdoctoral Fellows
Centre for Earth Observation Science

The Centre for Earth Observation Science (CEOS) at the University of
Manitoba is seeking qualified candidates for two postdoctoral fellowships
focusing on climate forcing of sea ice and teleconnections between the
Arctic and more temperate latitudes. The position will be based in
Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
Applicants should have backgrounds in atmospheric science, physical
oceanography, climatology, physical geography, or related fields. The
successful candidates will have a proven publication track record and a
completed PhD (in exceptional circumstances a Master's may be considered).

Arctic and Northern Anthropology

The Department of Anthropology at the University of Calgary invites
applications for a tenure track position in Arctic and Northern
Anthropology at the Assistant Professor rank. The position will be based in
Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
The successful applicant will teach courses at all levels in the Social and
Cultural Anthropology undergraduate program, and supervise masters and
doctoral students in the Department of Anthropology. The successful
applicant will also be expected to maintain an active research program,
open to collaborations. Preferred areas of research for this position will
be located at the intersection of northern life, energy industries,
environment, and politics. Potential research themes include but are not
limited to: complex energy systems, arctic knowledge economies,
environmental sustainability, land use and occupancy, energy and security,
corporate responsibility, development and human migration, climate change,
and social and health impact of exploration and extractive activities.
Applicants must have a completed PhD, conducted ethnographic research in
northern communities, and published on topics related to arctic and
northern communities in relation to energy industries by the time of
appointment.

- University of Manitoba seeks PhD Student
Arctic Physical Oceanography
Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
The University of Manitoba seeks a student for a PhD position to study
physical oceanography in ice-covered seas in the Arctic. The position will
be based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
The student's degree will be housed within the Centre for Earth Observation
Science (CEOS) at the University of Manitoba, and fieldwork will be focused
in arctic Canada and Greenland. The project will involve field and
laboratory/model research to examine how the sea ice cover affects ocean
stratification. The PhD position will seek to answer several questions,
including:
- How does brine rejection affect turbulence beneath sea ice and mixed
layer properties?
- How does sea ice melt affect stratification?
- What is the role of storms on water column stability at various ice
covered conditions?
- What is the role of ocean dynamics in sea-ice formation and melting?
The successful candidate will have a Master's degree in oceanography or a
related field. Field experience in remote camps and/or on oceanographic
research vessels, and a knowledge base of physical oceanography and general
oceanographic techniques will be assets for the position.
