    Bering Sea Project

The Bering Sea Project Science Advisory Board is making a call for
expression of interest in an Open Science Meeting (OSM) provisionally
planned to convene in 22-23 February 2014 in association with the 2014
Ocean Sciences Meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The OSM aims to communicate research results of the 2007-2013 Bering Sea
Project -- also known as the Bering Sea Ecosystem Study (BEST) and the
Bering Sea Integrated Ecosystem Research Program (BSIERP) -- and to
engage the community working in related disciplines and regions. It is
conceived as a one-day meeting featuring a series of integrated talks,
including a poster session and oral presentations, preceding the opening
of the Ocean Sciences conference.

The OSM will welcome topics within the broad scope of the Bering Sea
Project, "to understand the impacts of climate change and dynamic sea
ice cover on the eastern Bearing Sea ecosystem" and related work from
disciplines not included in the program, other related research
programs, and other subarctic regions.

The intent of the survey is to gauge community interest and availability
to inform OSM planning.

    American Fisheries Society, Alaska Chapter Annual Meeting
    7-11 October 2013

Organizers announce a call for session proposals for the 40th annual
meeting of the Alaska Chapter of the American Fisheries Society. The
meeting will be convened 7-11 October 2013 at the Princess Fairbanks
Lodge in Fairbanks, Alaska.

The theme of the meeting is "The Practice of Fisheries: Celebrating All
Who Work Toward Sustainable Fisheries in Alaska." It was chosen in
celebration of the many varied peoples who contribute to the health and
sustainability of Alaska's fisheries and fishing communities, whether as
biologists, fisheries managers, students, artists, and so on. This theme
will be exemplified through a broad array of sessions including
keynotes, contributed oral sessions, and a poster session; and a long
list of social activities and tours. Sessions can focus on the practice
of fisheries science or management, can be disciplinary or
interdisciplinary, and should include 4-6 presentations at a length of
20 minutes each, including time for questions. Sessions often cover
topics such as: Marine Fisheries, Freshwater Fisheries, Habitat, Recent
Advances in Fish and Fisheries, Hatcheries, Human Dimensions, Modeling,
Food Webs, Research Methods, etc.

Anyone interested in chairing (or co-chairing) a session is invited to
send a short (250-word) abstract and a (tentative) list of speakers to
Philip Loring (ploring [at] alaska.edu) for consideration no later than 15
June 2013.

The tentative schedule for the meeting includes continuing education
workshops and organized tours that will be held on the first two days of
the meeting (October 7 and 8), and a welcome reception scheduled for
Tuesday evening (October 8). The keynote address and plenary session
will be Wednesday morning, followed by concurrent oral sessions, with a
poster session, social, and open mic (new event) Wednesday evening
(October 9). Thursday and Friday (October 10 and 11) will be dedicated
to concurrent sessions, with the banquet Thursday evening along with
entertainment and an auction. The annual business meeting will be held
Friday late morning, after which student awards will be presented before
the meeting adjourns. In addition to the open mic night, new elements
for this year's meeting will include a trivia challenge with prizes
during the banquet, and 20-minute "learning studios" in which experts
will offer mini-lessons on fisheries-related topics to small audiences.

    20th GEOSummit Meeting

The Greenland Summit's Science Coordination Office announces that the
20th GEOSummit meeting will be held as a side meeting in conjunction
with the 2013 Arctic Observing Summit. The GEOSummit meeting will be
convened Friday, 3 May 2013 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Attendees of the Arctic Observing Summit are invited to participate in
the GEOSummit meeting, which will showcase recent science highlights,
new projects that will be starting at Summit this summer, and currently
pending proposals. Attendees, as well as those unable to attend, are
invited to submit one or two power point slides highlighting their
recent, current, or pending Summit-based project. Contributions will be
organized into themes, and presented as an overview. Attendees will be
invited to augment the comments on their own projects, but organizers
hope to receive slides from as much of the community as possible.

Slides regarding new projects and recently proposed work are invited to
include any intended hypotheses and approaches. Those involved in large
coordinated efforts (e.g. NOAA, LTO, ICECAPS) are asked to confer with
their group about whether all PIs should submit individually, or if the
group would prefer to provide one organized overview summary -- in the
latter case, please include that information with the submission.

    Workshop on Subglacial Hydrology
    26-30 August 2013 (Excursion 31 August - 1 September)

The Nordic Centre of Excellence 'Stability and Variations of Arctic Land
Ice' project announces that a workshop on subglacial hydrology will be
held 26-30 August 2013, with an excursion to follow on 31 August and 1
September. The workshop will be convened at the University of Iceland's
Institute of Earth Sciences in Reykjavik, Iceland.

The aim of this workshop is to give a thorough introduction on the
theory, observations and modeling in the field of glacial hydrology.
Students and researchers with interest in glaciology and hydrology are
encouraged to join the course; those with backgrounds in geology and/or
geography will also benefit. Students must have an undergraduate degree
in geophysics, engineering, or related field. Some experience with
mathematics and scientific computing will be required for some of the
topics that will be considered.

Registration deadline: Tuesday, 23 April 2013.
