Hydrologic and Geochemical Modeling of Permafrost
Fairbanks, Alaska
The Water and Environmental Research Center (WERC) and the Department of
Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF)
in collaboration with the Cold Regions Research and Engineering
Laboratory (CRREL) Fairbanks and the Geophysical Institute at UAF seek
candidates for a PhD position and a Master's of Science (M.S.) position
in hydrologic and geochemical modeling and field measurements.
Employment will start as soon as possible and no later than January
2014. Both positions are located in Fairbanks, Alaska.
The two positions are part of the Jarvis Creek Watershed project and
will focus on glacier-permafrost-hydrology interactions. The PhD
position is at WERC and includes numerical model simulations using the
physically based Water Flow and Balance Simulation Model (WaSiM),
downscaled climate model scenarios, and field measurements in order to
assess the role of glacier wastage on lowland hydrology and permafrost
in the Jarvis Creek and Tanana River basins in Interior Alaska. The M.S.
position is at the UAF Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and
focuses on analyzing the variation of contributing sources and
dominating flow pathways in the Jarvis Creek watershed using geochemical
tracers. The positions include multiple field trips to perform glacier,
snow, meteorological, hydrological, and geochemical measurements.
The successful candidates will hold a Bachelor's and/or M.S. degree in
hydrology, geosciences, physical geography, physics, chemistry,
engineering, or related fields. Experience with fieldwork, hydrological
modeling, geographic information systems (GIS), glaciology, and
programming for the PhD position or geochemistry for the M.S. position
is desirable. Good oral and written communication skills are
prerequisite.
Applicants must submit a complete application to the appropriate
graduate program at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Prior contact
with the principal researchers is recommended. Applicants should submit,
preferably in a single PDF, a cover letter stating motivation for
graduate studies and the particular project, contact information of
three referees, a curriculum vitae, and academic transcripts.
Review of applications will start as soon as possible.
The positions are open until filled.

- University of Groningen seeks PhD Candidate
Arctic Archaeology
Groningen, Netherlands
The Arctic Centre at University of Groningen seeks a PhD candidate in
Arctic archaeology. Assessment of the candidate's progress after the
first year will determine whether employment can be continued. The
position is based in Groningen, Netherlands.
The aim of this PhD project is to investigate the function of
hunter-gatherer container technologies in the North Pacific Rim (i.e.,
Chukotka, Bering Strait, and Alaska); when and why pottery first
appeared in this higher-latitude region; and how and why ceramic
container technologies become central to local human adaptations. The
main objective is to reconstruct specific patterns of vessel usage and
the range of resources being processed in different settings. The study
will also draw on relevant contextual data from archaeology,
paleoecology, ethnography, and/or ethnoarchaeology, and experimental
studies to aid interpretations.
The successful applicant will hold a Master's degree in archaeology or
related discipline, have proven research abilities, close affinity with
the research topic, archeological laboratory work experience, command of
the English language, and academic writing skills.
Application deadline: Saturday, 31 August 2013.

- NERSC seeks Researcher
Climate Modeling
Bergen, Norway
The Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center (NERSC), in
collaboration with the Center for Climate Dynamics (SKD) at the
University of Bergen, seek a researcher in climate modeling. The
position is available with a four-year contract and is based in Bergen,
Norway.
NERC conducts basic and applied environmental and climate research
focusing on climate processes, variability, and change; Arctic and
marine remote sensing; ocean modeling, data assimilation, and
forecasting; and the socio-economic impact of global change.
The research position will strengthen research at NERSC and SKD
addressing naturally occurring and human-made changes to global and
regional climate through analysis and numerical experiments with the
Norwegian Earth System Model (NorESM). Research activities may cover
various topics notably: setting up, running and evaluating climate model
sensitivity experiments; conducting analysis relevant for a specific
climate target (e.g., the two-degree target); testing and evaluating new
sea ice dynamics and physics; improved scheme for air-sea ice
interactions; and preparing climate model output for downscaling. The
successful candidate should have experience using NorESM, the Community
Earth System Model (CESM), or other general circulation climate models.
Applicants must have a doctoral degree (Norwegian PhD or equivalent) in
meteorology, oceanography, atmospheric sciences, or related fields. A
strong background in climate modeling, insight into the dynamics and
physics of the coupled climate system, and knowledge of basic statistics
are required. Experience working in a Unix environment and with the
software necessary for using NorESM and CESM is essential. Familiarity
with parallel computer platforms is an advantage.
Applications, including full a curriculum vitae and the names and emails
of three references, should include "Applications SKD modeler" in the
subject line and be submitted to: admin [at] nersc.no with copy to Yongqi Gao
(yongqi.gao [at] nersc.no).
Application deadline: Friday, August 23rd 2013.

- Stockholm University seeks Postdoctoral Candidates
Arctic Ocean Climate System
Stockholm, Sweden
The Department of Geological Sciences, Stockholm University, in
collaboration with the Swedish-Russian-U.S. Arctic Ocean Investigation
of Climate-Cryosphere-Carbon Interactions (SWERUS-C3) seeks candidates
for two postdoctoral positions in Arctic Ocean climate systems. Both
positions are based in Stockholm, Sweden.
SWERUS-C3 is a multi-disciplinary program aimed to investigate the
linkages between climate, cryosphere, and carbon release from the Arctic
Ocean sediment and the quantities of carbon stored on and along Arctic
Ocean margins and the potential release of trace gases from this source.
The postdoctoral positions available are:
Carbon trace gas emissions from the eastern shelf seas of the Arctic Ocean
(Reference number SU FV-2016-13).
Modelling Arctic Ocean paleo-circulation and its influence on gas
hydrates stability (Reference number SU FV-1961-13).
Application deadline for both positions: Friday, 20 August 2013.
