- British Antarctic Survey seeks Researcher
Sea Ice Modeling
Cambridge, United Kingdom
The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) seeks a researcher in sea ice
modeling. This full-time position is available starting 1 January 2014
for duration of two years. It is based in Cambridge, United Kingdom.
The position is based in the Polar Oceans Program as part of a
collaborative project between BAS, the National Oceanography Centre in
Southampton, and the Met Office Hadley Centre in Exeter. The successful
applicant will join a team investigating ocean and ice variability in
the Southern and Arctic oceans. The goal of the project is to understand
why Antarctic sea ice has expanded in recent decades, in sharp contrast
to the dramatic decline in ice witnessed in the Arctic. The position
will be responsible for running models of the Southern Ocean and its sea
ice in order to study trends in Antarctic sea ice over the last three
decades.
The successful applicant will have a degree or higher qualification in
physics, mathematics, or a relevant science subject; previous experience
of programming in a linux/unix environment including familiarity with
Fortran and Matlab/Python; and experience in running ocean models.
Application deadline: Sunday, 29 September 2013.

- Norwegian Polar Institute seeks Postdoctoral Researcher
Interaction of Solar Radiation and Sea Ice
Tromso, Norway
The Norwegian Polar Institute seeks applicants for a postdoctoral
research fellow position on the project "Solar Transmittance in the
Arctic as a Seasonally Ice-covered Sea." The position is available
starting November 2013 for a period of two and one half years with a
possible extension for one and one half years, depending on funding. The
position is based in Tromso, Norway.
The goals of the project are to better understand the seasonal and
spatial variability of the transmission of solar radiation through sea
ice in the Arctic, particularly the first- and second-year ice, and to
learn about the effect this energy has on the upper ocean, ocean-ice
interaction, and biological activity. The successful applicant will be
expected to carry out and analyze spectral and broadband measurements of
solar radiative fluxes, along with optically relevant measurements of
sea-ice and snow physical properties. Fieldwork in the Arctic will be
required to install autonomous setups and perform in-situ measurements.
The results are to be published in a timely fashion in international
journals.
The successful candidate must have a PhD in atmospheric science,
oceanography, or another relevant area and have a strong scientific
understanding of radiative transfer and measurements of solar radiation.
Experience with any of the following will be seen as an asset: radiation
measurements, measurements of ice and snow physical properties,
radiative transfer modeling or regional modeling, and polar fieldwork.
The applicant's publication record will also be considered as an asset.
Application deadline: Sunday, 1 September 2013.

- University of Alaska seeks Postdoctoral Fellow
Ecosystem Ecology
Anchorage, Alaska
The University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) seeks a postdoctoral research
fellow in ecosystem ecology. This three-year appointment is expected to
begin February 2014 and is based in Anchorage, Alaska.
The successful candidate will hold the position of Ecosystem Ecologist
and will do research to quantify the biogeochemical and feedback
consequences of changes in the interactions between geese and wet sedge
ecosystems occurring as a result of shifts in the timing of migration
and vegetation phenology. The work will be focused in the
Yukon-Kuskokwim river delta of western Alaska. The successful candidate
will be stationed at a remote field camp from May to August and
undertake summer-long measurements of carbon cycling in a manipulated
field study to characterize how the timing of goose grazing affects
carbon exchange, plant growth, soil and plant mineral nutrition, and
biosphere-atmosphere feedbacks. The successful candidate will use a
suite of measurement packages including in situ carbon dioxide exchange
system, stable isotopes of plants, soils, geese, and micrometerological
stations.
The successful applicant will have training in ecosystem ecology,
field-based carbon exchange measurements, and ecosystem process
modeling. Additional interests in plant-animal interactions, food web
ecology, bird migration studies, diet ecology, or climate change in
Arctic systems is desirable. The position will supervise graduate and
undergraduate students and will have some intellectual flexibility to
pursue associated studies.
Application review begins: Sunday, 1 September 2013.
The position is open until filled.

- University of Alaska seeks Research Assistant
Marine Science and Limnology
School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences
Fairbanks, Alaska
The School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences at the University of Alaska
Fairbanks seeks a student research assistant in the Graduate Program of
Marine Science and Limnology. The position is available to PhD or
Masters of Science (M.S.) candidates, is funded for two and one half
years, and is based in Fairbanks, Alaska.
The successful applicant will be expected to enroll in the graduate
program in Spring 2014, but may be hired as a staff research technician
as early as 1 October 2013.
The student research assistant will participate in a project applying
high-throughput DNA sequencing techniques in the study of meiofaunal
communities in the Arctic. The student will take a lead role in sample
processing and data analysis, including both standard microscopic
analysis and morphological taxonomy and high-throughput sequencing
approaches. Data will be used to assess meiofaunal community structure
and diversity in the U. S. Arctic, and identify possible environmental
drivers of community structure. Skills developed will include DNA
extraction, purification, next-generation sequencing methods, and
analysis of sequence data. Prior experience in molecular methods is
desirable, but not essential.
The student will be expected to travel for extended periods to
University of California, Davis to receive training in sequencing
methods and data analysis and may also have the opportunity to
participate in research cruises in the Arctic.
Prospective students are encouraged to apply at either the M.S. or PhD
level. PhD candidates are expected to develop additional research
objectives that complement the project and work with the advisor in
pursuing additional funding sources.
Complete applications must include three letters of recommendation,
general GRE scores, and transcripts from all institutions attended.
Application deadline for spring enrollment: 15 October 2013.

Hydrological Modeling of Upper Yukon River
Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Canada
The Northern Climate ExChange, part of the Yukon Research Centre at
Yukon College, seeks a postdoctoral fellow to develop a hydrological
model of the upper Yukon River basin. This full-time three-year position
is based in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Canada.
The upper Yukon River is predominately a glacial regime type basin
draining the Coast Mountains of northern British Columbia. The basin is
within the sporadic permafrost zone. The successful candidate will
develop a numerical simulation model for the system, which will be used
to examine the inter-annual discharge variability of the upper Yukon
River and its likely response to future climate scenarios. The model
will be used by Yukon Energy Corporation to assess hydroelectricity
supply scenarios for the Whitehorse hydroelectric facility. The
successful candidate will also coordinate and participate in fieldwork
consisting of geophysical and snow surveys and the installation and
maintenance of meteorological monitoring stations.
The successful candidate will have a PhD, which has been awarded within
the last five years in hydrology, physical geography, glaciology, earth
system science, physics, engineering, or a related field. The ideal
candidate will have a background in hydrology and glaciology, strong
modeling or computer programming skills, experience in conducting
fieldwork in remote locations, experience leading collaborative research
activities, and be able to work well in a team environment. Strong
English language oral and written communication skills are required.
The position is open until filled.
