Wilfrid Laurier University seeks applicants for a research associate
position in the Cold Regions Water Science project investigating Arctic
hydrology. Starting date for the position is 20 May 2014 or as soon as
possible. The position is based in Waterloo, Ontario Canada.

The successful candidate will support a program conducting hydrological
research in the Western Canadian Arctic focused on understanding the
linkages between climate, vegetation, snow, permafrost, and hydrology.
Fieldwork will be carried out at remote sites in the Northwest
Territories where the candidate will be involved in field camp building
and maintenance. This position will require regular travel to field
sites in Arctic Canada. The successful candidate must be comfortable
working in remote areas under extreme climate.

The successful candidate will be involved in all components of the
research program, including:

  • Field instrument selection and testing, field site selection, field
    installation, and post field data analysis to ensure instrumentation
    operation;
  • Analysis of hydrological field data and hydrological model data; and
  • Analysis of remote sensing data sets including LiDAR, Satellite
    images, and aerial photographs and GIS analysis for all aspects of this
    project.

Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Masters of Science or PhD in the natural sciences from a recognized
    university, with a specialization in hydrology, cryospheric sciences, or
    atmospheric sciences and coupled with relevant training and field
    experience;
  • Experience conducting hydrologic field research in wilderness
    settings, using various GIS and remote sensing software, and analysis of
    hydrological field and model, data;
  • Ability to process and analyze various remote sensing data sets
    including Lidar, aerial photographs, and satellite images; and
  • Currently have, or a willingness to learn or obtain, wilderness first
    aid; firearms safety; and tower climbing safety.

Scientific and technical writing skills and experience in coding in
Fortran, C++or other computer languages are an asset.

The University of Bremen seeks candidates for a Junior Research Group
leader position in remote sensing of sea ice. There is a tenure track
option for this position, which will be based in Bremen, Germany.

The Remote Sensing of Sea Ice group will undertake research in the
remote sensing of ice in the Cryosphere to complement and enhance the
existing competencies in sea ice remote sensing at a variety of
institutions. Potential foci for the research group include
quantification of radiative and biological processes in ice and snow,
taking into account the role of the ocean and atmosphere. The research
objectives, which may be refined in collaboration with partner
institutions, are to test the current understanding of atmospheric and
ocean circulation in climate models and to assess the accuracy of the
prediction of weather and ice at high latitudes.

Required qualifications for this position include excellent doctorate
credentials and publications in peer-reviewed international journals or
other comparable publications. Expertise gained while working abroad in
doctoral or postdoctoral research is preferred.
