Sea Ice Modeling and Data Assimilation
15-16 September 2014
Toulouse, France
Organizers announce a workshop on Sea Ice Modeling and Data
Assimilation. The workshop will be held 15-16 September 2014 in
Toulouse, France.
This workshop is organized by the International Ice Charting Working
Group Data Assimilation Working Group (IICWG) together with the European
Union's 7th Framework Programme Climate, Economics - Arctic Research on
Change (EU FP7 ICE-ARC) project and is a continuation of a series of
events from 2007 through 2013.
The focus of the workshop is on research and development related to
numerical sea ice analysis and prediction. General topics for the
workshop include:
- Sea ice observations and uncertainties;
- Sea ice data assimilation (methods and results);
- Sea ice model parameterizations and coupling to ocean and atmosphere
models; and - Verification approaches for se-ice analyses and forecasts.
It is expected that most workshop attendees will give presentations,
each of which will be allowed 30 minutes. Participants should provide a
short abstract in the registration form. The workshop is limited to 40
participants.
Registration deadline: Sunday, 15 June 2014.

Sea Ice and Climate Modeling Forum on Large-Scale Sea-Ice Simulations
26 September 2014
University of Reading
Reading, United Kingdom
Organizers announce a sea ice and climate modeling forum workshop on
large-scale sea-ice simulations. The workshop will be held on 26
September 2014 at the University of Reading, in Reading, United Kingdom.
This one-day workshop provides a forum for users and developers of
sea-ice models to start a joint effort for improving sea-ice models.
Discussions will include the analysis of sea-ice biases in the Coupled
Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) models, determine the most
pressing needs for model development, identify the most helpful
observational data, and compile a list of the most useful sea ice
variables to be saved for CMIP6.
The workshop is the first in a series of planned activities from the Sea
ice and Climate Modeling Forum, which is a World Climate Research
Programme - Climate and Cryosphere (WCRP-CliC) initiative that aims to
improve and better understand large-scale sea-ice simulations by
coordinating a joint effort of the international sea ice modeling
community. Following a few short plenary talks, the workshop will
consist of breakout group and discussion sessions.
Registration deadline: Monday, 30 June 2014.

- Call for Papers
9th Arctic Frontiers Conference: Climate and Energy
18-23 January 2015
Tromso, Norway
Organizers announce a call for papers for the 9th Arctic Frontiers
Conference entitled "Climate and Energy." The conference will convene
18-23 January 2015 in Tromso, Norway.
The Arctic Frontiers conference will provide a forum for representatives
from science, politics, and civil society to share perspectives on how
upcoming challenges in the Arctic may be addressed to ensure sustainable
development. Arctic Frontiers is composed of a policy section and a
scientific section.
This call for papers is for the scientific section, which will address
three main themes:
- Arctic climate change - global implications;
- Ecological winners and losers in future Arctic marine ecosystems; and
- The Arctic's role in the global energy supply and security.
Abstract submission deadline: 22 September 2014.
For further information and to download abstract submission
instructions, go to: http://www.arcticfrontiers.com.
