The Institute of Arctic Studies in the Dickey Center for International
Understanding at Dartmouth College encourages early career scholars to
apply for the Society of Fellows postdoctoral program. These fellowships
will run from September 2015 through June 2018 and are open to scholars
who have completed a PhD no earlier than 1 January 2013. The program is
based in Hanover, New Hampshire.

The Society of Fellows program fosters the academic careers of scholars
who have recently received their PhD degrees, by permitting them to
pursue their research while gaining mentored experience as teachers and
members of the departments and/or programs in which they are housed.
Society Postdoctoral Fellows:

  • Participate in the activities of the Society, including presenting
    their own work;
  • Hold appointments as lecturers in a department and/or program, this
    appointment is not tenure-track;
  • Teach one course each of the three academic years;
  • Are in residence for the fall, winter, and spring terms, and during
    one of two summer terms;
  • Receive training in teaching via the Dartmouth Center for the
    Advancement of Learning;
  • Are not asked to teach basic language courses;
  • Have access to college resources such as the library and computing
    center; and
  • Do not control dedicated laboratory or studio space.

Off-campus research leave during academic terms is permitted only in
rare cases, only for brief periods of time, and only upon written
application to the Faculty Director of the Society well in advance of
the proposed leave.

The North Pacific Research Board (NPRB) seeks candidates for the
position of communications and outreach director. The anticipated start
date for the position is 3 November 2014. The position is based in
Anchorage, Alaska.

Congress created the NPRB in 1997 to recommend marine research
initiatives to the U.S. Secretary of Congress. NPRB supports research on
marine ecosystem dynamics and sustainable use of natural marine
resources in the Gulf of Alaska, Bering Sea/Aleutian Islands, and the
Chukchi/Beaufort Seas.

The communications and outreach director is responsible for the design,
implementation and management of a comprehensive strategy for
disseminating information about NPRB's activities. The communications
and outreach director translates scientific information into
user-friendly terms and packages it for maximum accessibility, exposure,
and impact.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) seeks applicants for a graduate
research assistantship position in marine biology. This position is
within a new project developing an Arctic Marine Biodiversity Observing
Network (AMBON). The project duration is for five years with an expected
start date in January 2015, or latest in May 2015. The position is based
in Fairbanks, Alaska.

The AMBON project is interdisciplinary in nature with research partners
from multiple institutions and agencies. The student is encouraged to
develop a graduate project that pertains to Arctic benthic communities
and food web processes, as well as their links to oceanographic
conditions, pelagic system and/or higher trophic levels. In addition,
the student will be deeply involved in program management, including
reporting, website development, field planning, data management,
outreach activities. The project includes three sea-going field seasons
in the Chukchi Sea. As part of the PhD degree, the student will complete
course work in the marine science field within the Graduate Program in
Marine Science and Limnology at UAF.

The successful candidate will have a Master's of Science degree in
marine biology or a related science field and excellent oral and written
communication sills. Experiences in science program management, GIS
mapping, website design/maintenance, and outreach activities are a
benefit. Alaska Natives and individuals from other underrepresented
groups are especially encouraged to apply.
