  1. ACCAP Alaska Climate Webinar
Extreme Weather Events on the Last Frontier:
    Meteorological Analyses and Societal Impacts
    10:00 to 11:00 a.m. (AKDT)
    Thursday, 23 October 2014

The Alaska Center for Climate Assessment and Policy (ACCAP) will host a
webinar entitled "Extreme Weather Events on the Last Frontier:
Meteorological Analyses and Societal Impacts" on Thursday, 23 October
2014 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. AKDT.

Please note the special day.

To register for the webinar, please fill out the form available at:
https://accap.uaf.edu/extreme_events_webinar.

The webinar will be presented by Lauren Zuromski, a NOAA Hollings
Scholar, along with John Walsh of the University of Alaska Fairbanks,
and Rick Thoman of the National Weather Service (NWS).

The National Weather Service lacks a comprehensive compilation of major
weather events in Alaska. Creating a repository of the effects of past
storms and other extreme weather events on society, together with
documentation of the meteorological evolution of the events, will
facilitate the NWS and other government agencies to analyze this data.

This research examines six high-impact weather events in Alaska, ranging
in dates from 1974 until 2012. Reanalysis composites of sea-level
pressure, temperature, geopotential height, and vector wind allowed for
the storms to be tracked and for weather pattern anomalies to be
recognized. Societal impacts were investigated by using the National
Climactic Data Center (NCDC)'s online Storm Events Database and by
utilizing microfilms of Alaskan newspapers detailing the events.
