The Alaska Center for Climate Assessment and Policy (ACCAP) will host a
webinar titled "Arctic Science Summit Week/Arctic Observing Summit 2016"
on Tuesday, 22 September 2015 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. AKDT. It will be
presented by Hajo Eicken, University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF), and
Peter Schlosser, Columbia University.
Arctic Science Summit Week (ASSW) is the annual gathering of
international organizations engaged in supporting and facilitating
long-term planning in Arctic research and related measurement campaigns.
ASSW provides opportunities for coordination, collaboration, and
cooperation in all areas of Arctic science. ASSW 2016 is designed to
strengthen international, interdisciplinary collaborations. It will also
facilitate communication across academia, government agencies, local
communities, industry, non-governmental organizations, and other Arctic
stakeholders. Public lectures, outreach events, workshops, recreational
activities, tours, and field trips will be part of the week as well.
The Arctic Observing Summit (AOS), which is part of the larger ASSW
umbrella, is a high-level, biennial summit that aims to provide
community-driven, science-based guidance for the design, implementation,
coordination, and sustained long-term (decades) operation of an
international network of Arctic observing systems. It is co-led by the
International Study of Arctic Change (ISAC), the International Arctic
Science Committee (IASC), and the Arctic Council's Sustaining Arctic
Observing Networks (SAON) initiative. The next AOS will be hosted at the
University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) 15-18 March 2016 in conjunction
with the Arctic Science Summit Week. Two of the AOS 2016 Co-Chairs Hajo
Eicken (UAF) and Peter Schlosser (Columbia University, ISAC Steering
Committee Chair) will provide a brief overview of AOS background,
objectives and specific themes and activities identified for AOS 2016.
