A graduate course entitled "The Arctic Atmospheric Boundary Layer and
Local Climate Processes" will be available spring semester 2012 through
The University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS). The course is intended for
Master's and PhD students; exceptionally, undergraduate students may be
considered.
Weather forecasts in the Arctic are often unreliable, and the global
climate models show a large uncertainty in scenarios. One of the reasons
is that processes in the arctic atmospheric boundary layer often are
poorly implemented in these kinds of models. The course covers themes
relevant for the arctic atmospheric boundary layer such as theory of the
boundary layer with special emphasis on the stable boundary layer,
turbulence, local climate processes, air-ice-sea interaction,
topographically induced phenomena, measuring techniques and data
analysis, and numerical modeling.
After the course, the student will have an understanding of physical
processes typical for the arctic atmospheric boundary layer, how the
arctic boundary layer differs from that at lower latitudes, the
challenges of taking meteorological measurements, and a basic
understanding of how numerical models in the Arctic work.
