The National Science Foundation (NSF) is pleased to accept nominations
for the 2011 Alan T. Waterman Award. Each year, the Foundation bestows
the Waterman Award to recognize the talent, creativity, and influence of
a singular young researcher. Established in 1975 to commemorate the
Foundation's first Director, the Waterman Award is NSF's highest honor
for researchers under the age of 36.

Nominees are accepted from any field of science or engineering that NSF
supports. The award recipient will receive a medal and an invitation to
the formal awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. In addition, the
recipient will receive a grant of $500,000 over a three-year period for
scientific research or advanced study in any field of science or
engineering supported by the National Science Foundation, at any
institution of the recipient's choice.

Candidates must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. They must be 35
years of age or younger, or not more than 7 years beyond receipt of a
PhD degree by December 31 of the year in which they are nominated.

Candidates should have demonstrated exceptional individual achievements
in scientific or engineering research of sufficient quality to place
them at the forefront of their peers. Criteria include originality,
innovation, and significant impact on the field.

Complete nomination packages, consisting of nominations and four letters
of reference, are due by Saturday, 30 October 2010. The nominations and
letters must be received through the FastLane system.

  1. Early Career Award for Public Engagement with Science
    American Association for the Advancement of Science

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) announces
a call for nominations for the AAAS Early Career Award for Public
Engagement with Science.

The award recognizes early-career scientists and engineers who
demonstrate excellence in their contribution to public engagement with
science activities. The award will be given at the AAAS Annual Meeting.
The recipient will receive a monetary prize of $5,000, a commemorative
plaque, complimentary registration to the AAAS Annual Meeting, and
reimbursement for reasonable hotel and travel expenses to attend the
AAAS Annual Meeting.

For the purposes of this award, public engagement activities are defined
as the individual's active participation in efforts to engage with the
public on science- and technology-related issues and promote meaningful
dialogue between science and society.

Nomination deadline: Friday, 15 October 2010.
