The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), Cold
Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL,
http://www.crrel.usace.army.mil) located in Hanover, New Hampshire
invites applications for a Research Mechanical Engineer.

The successful candidate will apply engineering/scientific expertise
related to extreme environments, including polar regions. Topics for
investigation may include engineering design or fabrication; materials
testing and heat transfer studies to improve mobility in polar regions;
robotics programming and adaptation for use in polar environments; etc.
The researcher is expected to complete experimental data collection or
computer programming/modeling, data organization and analysis, and
documentation of results in presentations and written reports,
conferences, or journal papers.

The position is developmental and will perform assignments that become
progressively more difficult until the full-performance level is
reached. Non-competitive promotion to the target job, provided the
incumbent meets all necessary qualification requirements for promotion
to the target grade.

A two-year National Science Foundation (NSF) -funded postdoctoral
research position is available at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
This position is open until filled.

The research project is devoted to constraining the response of the
Greenland Ice Sheet to past climatic periods naturally warmer than
present over the last 500,000 years by development and application of
provenance proxies (mineralogical and geochemical including Sr-Nd-Pb
isotopes) that define which segments of southern Greenland were
glaciated during past periods of retreat and advance. A strong
background in sedimentology and geochemistry is required.

  1. Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution seeks Research Assistant III
    Woods Hole, Massachusetts

The Physical Oceanography Department at the Woods Hole Oceanographic
Institution is searching for a Research Assistant III to join their
team. The position will be based in Woods Hole, Massachusetts.

The successful candidate will provide electronics and mechanical support
for construction, laboratory testing, operation, field installation, and
maintenance of scientific instruments and platforms, primarily in
ice-covered oceans. The position also participates in the organization,
interpretation, and summary of test results and acquired experimental
data using computer programs. Substantial sea duty (including strenuous
labor) in cold regions in late winter and summers will be required.

Applicants must have a Bachelor's Degree in an engineering field plus
related experience or equivalent. Physical duties for this position
include but are not limited to lifting up to 70lbs independently,
carrying, exposure to excessive cold, severe weather conditions,
prolonged work hours, extended periods at sea, exposure to hazardous
substances or specimens, and electrical/mechanical/power equipment
hazards. Previous polar field experience or oceanographic
instrumentation knowledge and data handling techniques would be helpful.
The position will require Canadian security and health clearances to
participate on cruises, and possibly a Transportation Worker
Identification Credential (TWIC) Card.
