The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) is currently recruiting up to
two motivated biologists to help up in a multifaceted endangered species
program. The positions are available through the Fairbanks Fish and
Wildlife Field Office in Fairbanks, Alaska.
The successful candidates will contribute to the conservation of
Steller's and spectacled eiders and polar bears, as well as candidate
species and species of concern.
The primary responsibilities will be to conduct consultations on
federally funded or permitted projects that may affect listed species,
and to implement candidate conservation, listing, and recovery
activities. Other responsibilities may include leading the development
and implementation of a conservation plan that manages village and
industrial growth in a manner that considers habitat needs of listed
species, and there may be opportunities to assist with field studies in
remote areas of Alaska. The position will require skilled written and
oral communication, an aptitude for critical thinking, and experience
evaluating biological information. Preference will be given to
individuals with experience evaluating impacts and with strong
analytical skills.

- University of Maryland seeks Field/Laboratory Research Technician

The University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science Horn Point
Laboratory seeks an entry-level research technician to work on two
National Science Foundation (NSF) -funded research projects to study the
diversity and activity of bacteria and other microbes in aquatic
ecosystems. The position will be based in Cambridge, Maryland.
Fieldwork includes 3 months per year of field sampling at the Toolik
Lake Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) site, located in the foothills
of the Brooks Range in Northern Alaska, and research cruises in coastal
waters off Oregon and Washington in association with the Center for
Coastal Margin Observation and Prediction (CMOP). Laboratory work
includes DNA extraction and analysis using a suite of molecular
techniques, epifluorescence microscopy, analytical chemistry, and
bacterial production measurements. The broad goal of these projects is
to understand temporal and spatial patterns in bacterial community
composition in freshwater, estuarine, and coastal marine ecosystems.
This position offers an excellent opportunity to gain experience in
ecological research in the field and laboratory, and to meet outstanding
research scientists from around the world. Ideal candidates will have
experience with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and other molecular
techniques, strong organizational skills and attention to detail,
physical ability to work under taxing conditions on the tundra and
onboard ships, and ability to work productively with a team.
The position begins in March 2010. Funding is currently available for

- Dartmouth College seeks Postdoctoral Fellow

The Department of Earth Sciences seeks outstanding candidates for the
Joseph P. Obering Postdoctoral Fellowship in Earth Sciences at Dartmouth
College. The position is based in Hanover, New Hampshire.
This fellowship provides recent PhD recipients the opportunity to pursue
independent research as well as to develop a teaching portfolio.
Candidates will be expected to collaborate with one or more Dartmouth
Earth Sciences faculty members, taking advantage of existing resources
and facilities, and will teach one course (under the quarter system) per
year. The fellowship provides two years of full-time salary and a
research allowance, with a third year contingent upon performance and
funding. The starting date is negotiable, but could be as early as 1
