  1. Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys seeks Geologist
    Fairbanks, Alaska

The Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) seeks a
senior-level geologist to manage an applied coastal hazards research
program, conduct studies of potential geologic hazards, and manage
geologic field project teams throughout the state of Alaska. The
position is full-time, and based in Fairbanks, Alaska.

The successful applicant will use expertise in advanced principles of
surficial geology, geomorphology, and engineering geology to prepare and
publish maps and reports on natural hazards in Alaska, with a special
emphasis on the coastal environment. The position works independently or
collaboratively in all aspects of this position, from writing proposals
and compiling published data to collecting new field data and preparing
maps and reports for publication.

Specific responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

- Developing a program plan, conducting needs assessments, engaging
in community outreach, and prioritizing at-risk communities in
consultation with appropriate agencies and local governments.
- Conducting or leading between one and six natural hazards research
projects each year from inception to completion, either as
stand-alone projects or as part of a larger division-wide project.
- Serving as the agency's liaison to the Alaska Coastal Management
Program (ACMP) and responding to requests from the public or from
other Department of Natural Resources (DNR) divisions or state
agencies for information, advice, or technical assistance on
proposed developments that may be affected by flooding, erosion, and
other geologic hazards in Alaska.
- Data analysis, preparation, and presentation of final maps and
reports on geologic hazards.
- Using GIS software to develop or oversee the development of
georeferenced storage, analysis, and display of acquired geologic
data.

Application Deadline: Monday, 2 November 2009.
Position is open until filled.

  1. Lehigh University seeks Graduate Student
    Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

The Earth and Environmental Sciences Department at Lehigh University
seeks a graduate student (MS or PhD) to be part of a new NSF-funded
project aimed at a better understanding of the climate, vegetation, and
ecosystem functioning during the early Holocene in Alaska. This position
will involve downscaling GCM output to a regional scale and running
experiments with a biogeochemical model of terrestrial carbon, nitrogen,
and water cycling.

Full funding (tuition and stipend) is available through a research
assistantship for either an MS or PhD. The specific dissertation or
thesis topic is flexible, as long as it fits within the context of the
overall project.
