The Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) is
seeking a senior-level geologist to manage an applied climate change
hazards research program, conduct studies of potential geologic hazards,
and manage geologic field project teams throughout the state of Alaska.
The successful applicant will use expertise in advanced principles of
Quaternary geology and engineering geology to prepare and publish maps
and reports on hazards related to climate change in Alaska, including
characteristics such as permafrost-rich ground, potentially unstable
slopes, shores and riverbanks prone to erosion, and areas at risk for
flooding. The successful applicant will work independently or
collaboratively in all aspects of this work, from writing proposals and
compiling published data to collecting new field data and preparing maps
and reports for publication.
Specific responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Development and implementation of an applied research program to
prioritize, map, and publish geologic-hazards information related to
climate change;
- Conducting or leading one or more climate change research projects
each year from inception to completion;
- Submitting samples for analyses such as radiocarbon dating,
performing data analysis, and preparing and presenting final maps and
reports on the geologic hazards of climate change, and related topics;
and
- Serving as the climate change liaison and responding to requests from
the public or from other DNR divisions or state agencies for
information, advice, or technical assistance on proposed developments.
The successful candidate will participate in a new helicopter-supported
field-geologic mapping and hazards evaluation program. Phase I of the
project, which is already funded, will include project planning, needs
assessment, prioritization of communities in consultation with
appropriate agencies and local governments, data gathering from
published sources, and mapping in one or more communities. This position
will work closely with a new Alaska coastal hazards program that DGGS is
also starting in 2009.
In addition to significant experience in both geologic mapping and
geologic hazards identification and mapping, DGGS is seeking a dynamic
leader with outstanding communication skills to forge productive,
positive relationships with rural Alaskan communities impacted by
climate change. Experience in project management and the use of GIS to
manage geologic data and generate products is strongly preferred.
