The Norwegian Polar Institute in Tromso, Norway, announces a climate
conference on "High Mountain Glaciers and Challenges Caused by Climate
Change," to be held 8-10 June 2009. Changes in high mountain glaciers
have significant social and economic impacts on water supplies,
hydropower production, and tourism; yet, glacier observations in these
regions are scarce.
The aim of the conference is to bring together scientists studying the
cryosphere in the high mountain regions with those studying downstream
effects of climate change, as well as policymakers who have to respond
to the effects of climate change. The program includes oral
presentations by invited speakers and poster sessions to allow
presentation of a wide range of relevant research. Conference topics
will include:
- Climate change in the high mountain regions of the world: Do climate
models adequately describe glacier systems? Similarities and
differences between high altitude and high latitude glaciers. Keynote:
Georg Kaser, Institute of Geography, University of Innsbruck, Austria.
- Climate change of high altitude glaciers and downstream effects.
Keynote: John Reynolds, Reynolds GEO-Sciences Ltd., Mold, Flintshire,
UK.
- Impacts and adaptation to climate change. Keynote: Christian
Nellemann, GRID-Arendal, Norway.
Participants are encouraged to submit posters related to the conference
topics. Submitted abstracts will made available at registration to all
participants in the form of a Book of Abstracts.
The registration deadline is Friday, 1 May 2009. For more information,
