The School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, at the University of Alaska
Fairbanks, announces open registration for a special summer course: Cold
Water Diving. Students will be beach and small boat SCUBA diving, and
will graduate from the course with a PADI Drysuit Certification.
This course will introduce students to cold water diving, and will train
certified SCUBA divers in drysuit use and maintenance. The course will
stress drysuit safety and buoyancy skills and will include practical
experience in cold-water rescue. The course will also familiarize
students with local Alaska sub-tidal flora and fauna and give students
an opportunity to work underwater. At the lab, various lectures will be
given on the use and maintenance of drysuits and other cold water
techniques. The course will be taught from 18-22 August 2008, from the
Kasitsna Bay Laboratory, in Seldovia, Alaska. The cost of the course is
$598, plus tuition, and students must provide proof of American Academy
of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) SCUBA certification.
