The University of Oslo, Department of Geosciences, Faculty of
Mathematics and Natural Sciences, announces the availability of a
post-doctoral research fellowship in glaciology. The candidate will work
on sampling, processing and interpretations of radar data and linkage to
firn cores with the aim to investigate spatial and temporal snow
distribution. Participation in the next field expedition in Antarctica
may be required.
The position is part of the "Norwegian-US Antarctic IPY-Traverse"
(TASTE-IDEA) project, funded by the Norwegian Research Council. The
overarching objectives of this collaborative project are to:
1 Understand climate variability in Dronning Maud Land of East
Antarctica on time scales of years to one millennium
2 Determine the ice sheet mass balance in this sector, in order to
understand its impact on sea level change
3 Investigate the impact of atmospheric and oceanic variability on the
chemical composition of firn and ice in this region
4 Revisit areas and sites first explored by traverses in the 1960s, for
detection of possible changes, and to establish benchmark datasets for
future research efforts.
Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree
in a relevant topic. To apply, please submit a statement of interest,
indicating a preferred start date, a CV, certified copies of any
certificates, a list of published and unpublished works, three copies of
selected scientific work (printed or non-printed), and names and contact
information of two references. Applications should be sent by Tuesday,
1 April 2008, to:
