The National Park Service (NPS) Arctic Network Inventory and Monitoring
Program (ARCN) is looking for students with backgrounds in biology,
natural resource management, physical science, wildlife, botany,
fisheries, or related fields to fill two summer positions.
The student Biological Sciences Technician will assist with logistics,
field camps, and equipment for 2008 field projects. Projects could
include aerial surveys of brown bear and Dall's sheep, Smith's longspur
surveys, vegetation, soil, fire effects and lake and stream sampling.
Candidates must work well in both individual and team settings, complete
training for aircraft, wilderness and firearm safety, have working
knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel and have some backcountry
experience. Knowledge of bird songs / calls, a healthy interest in
backcountry fieldwork, tolerance for flying insects and summer weather
in northern Alaska and lots of patience are also beneficial traits for
these positions.
ARCN is based in Fairbanks, Alaska, and works with the five northern
parks in Alaska, including Bering Land Bridge National Preserve, Cape
Krusenstern National Monument, Noatak National Preserve, Kobuk Valley
National Park and Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve.
