Dear Colleague,
I'm pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Peter Milne as Program
Director for the Antarctic Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences (AOAS) Program
in the Division of Antarctic Sciences.
A graduate of both the University of Melbourne (Australia) and the
University of Miami, Peter was a research associate professor at the
Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, Division of Marine
and Atmospheric Chemistry. His research interests include marine
photochemistry, atmospheric composition and reactivity, and the
atmospheric transport of organic compounds in urban and remote ocean
settings.
Peter has served as a Program Officer (rotator) at NSF in the Chemical
Oceanography program of the Division of Ocean Sciences, and also in the
Division of Atmospheric Sciences, working with the UCAR and Lower
Atmospheric Observing Facilities section. As a result, he brings
significant knowledge of NSF's facilities including ships, aircraft
platforms such as the NCAR C-130 and G-V (HIAPER), the supercomputer
facilities at CISL, and joint community modeling efforts such as CCSM
and WRF. He has also worked with JOI (now COL - Consortium for Ocean
Leadership) as Director of Observing Systems helping to formulate
initial requirements and plans for the Ocean Observing Initiative (OOI),
a major research facility project being constructed by NSF on behalf of
the oceanographic community.
Immediately prior to this appointment Peter served as ATM Program
Director for several NSF cross-cutting and multidisciplinary programs
and was also closely involved with both the Atmospheric Chemistry and
Climate and Large Scale Dynamics programs.
Peter's broad interests in the ocean and atmospheric sciences and his
interests in fostering interdisciplinary activities will mesh well with
the opportunities and challenges of AOAS program. Peter's appointment
was effective on 12 January 2008, and he can be reached via e-mail at:
pmilne [at] nsf.gov, or via telephone at 703-292-8033.
Sincerely,
Scott Borg
