ARCUS announces two Live from IPY! events taking place at the American
Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting in San Francisco, California. The
events are open to the public (registration required) and will be held
in Sierra A (5th floor) of the San Francisco Marriott Hotel. Online and
teleconference participation are available to individuals who cannot
attend in person.

Live from IPY! celebrates the International Polar Year by transporting
the public to remote polar locations through live from the field calls
and Internet presentations. Live from IPY! utilizes an Internet platform
that supports real-time online presentations, audio, and chat functions
to allow for interaction with teachers and researchers during their
PolarTREC expeditions.

Event Information:

Live from IPY! - South Pole Ozone Changes

When: Wednesday, 12 December 2007, 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. PST
Where: Marriott Hotel, Sierra A (5th floor)

PolarTREC teacher Elke Bergholz and a team of atmospheric researchers
are at the NOAA Clean Air Facility at the South Pole Station to collect
current data on atmospheric ozone to compare with data they collected in
1999. Ms. Bergholz and the team will attempt to measure the positive
influences of the Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the ozone
layer. The group will be collecting information on atmospheric ozone
(surface ozone, total ozone, and ozone profiles), carbon dioxide, and
aerosols. Comparisons will be made to atmospheric data in other parts of
the world in order to predict the influence that the Kyoto Protocol and
other clean air policies might have.

Live from IPY! - International Polar Day-Ice Sheets

When: Thursday, 13 December 2007, 9:30 to 11:45 a.m. PST
Where: Marriott Hotel, Sierra A (5th floor)

Celebrate International Polar Day and learn more about ice sheet
research in the polar regions with presentations from PolarTREC teacher
Brandon Gillette and ice sheet researchers, including members of
Antarctic research traverses taking place across the continent.

December 13 marks the second of four International Polar Days with a
focus on ice sheets. A special two-hour Live from IPY! event is being
held to give students and the public an opportunity to talk with
researchers and educators who study ice sheets in Antarctica and
Greenland.

A team of researchers and technicians from the Center for Remote Sensing
of Ice Sheets (CReSIS) and PolarTREC teacher Brandon Gillette are
spending two months documenting conditions at the West Antarctic Ice
Sheet (WAIS) divide. The team is working to characterize the base of the
ice sheet, which will be used to help interpret ice core data and
contribute to an improved understanding of ice sheets and their impacts.

Also presenting will be members of the ANDRILL project from McMurdo
Station, as well as researchers from the Norgegian/U.S. Traverse Team and
the Sweden-Japan Traverse Team presently traversing across the Antarctic
Ice Sheet. Although not presently on the ice sheet, Greenland
researchers will also be joining the presentation.

Both Live from IPY! events are free and open to the public. Those
interested in attending in person or participating via the Internet
platform are requested to register in advance at:
