The Cold Climate Housing Research Center (CCHRC) and the University of
Alaska Fairbanks (UAF), in partnership with the Northern Forum, will
host the 1st Biennial Forum on Sustainable Northern Shelter on 28-30
October 2007, in Fairbanks, Alaska. Entitled "Sustainable Northern
Shelter in a World of Diminishing Resources," the forum presents an
opportunity for an international group of builders, architects, building
scientists, and planners to discuss common challenges and exchange
solutions to producing sustainable, appropriate, and durable buildings
and infrastructure in the circumpolar north. The forum is held in
conjunction with the International Polar Year.
The desired outcomes of the forum are the identification of pressing
research needs in the field of northern building and infrastructure
design and technology, the development of ongoing circumpolar
partnerships, agreement on complementary research topics, and the wide
spread appropriate dissemination of the information gathered.
Forum topics include:
- Building Science and Construction in the North;
- Energy and Alternative Energy Systems and Infrastructure;
- Appropriate Sustainable Design of Buildings and Communities; and
- Integration of Ideas and Development of Future Agenda.
The forum is scheduled to begin the day after the closing of the Alaska
Federation of Natives Annual Convention in Fairbanks and at the
conclusion of the forum an agenda for the next forum will be
established.
Keynote speeches will be webcast. Forum organizers are interested in
connecting with communities in an interactive Town Hall fashion.
