A special section in JGR-Oceans will include a collection of original
papers on advances in the understanding and modeling of small-scale sea
ice kinematics and dynamics associated with the recent availability of
high-resolution ice motion observations.

Recent availability of small-scale ice motion data produced by the
RADARSAT Geophysical Processor (RGPS) program has allowed a more
detailed look at the time-varying deformation of the ice cover. With the
advent of high-resolution coupled ice-ocean models that approach the
widths of leads, a better understanding of sea ice behavior at these
scales is becoming increasingly important. Model simulations can now be
examined in detail using the small-scale observations from
high-resolution imagery. The RGPS observations points to the importance
of understanding the consequence of the ice pack as an anisotropic
material with large-scale oriented fracture patterns. For climate
studies, the impact of an anisotropic ice cover is not well understood
in terms of the modeled surface heat and mass balance. It is the
progress in this area of investigation that will be the focus of this
special section.
