SESSION DESCRIPTION
High-latitude and high-altitude aquatic ecosystems share similar
physical conditions often at or near the extremes of conditions that
allow key ecosystem processes and functions. This session will focus on
comparisons of the physical, chemical, and biological interactions
within these systems that may fundamentally determine ecosystem-level to
organism-level properties such as ecosystem structure, production,
population dynamics, life history strategies, and adaptive physiologies
of individual organisms. Through better understanding of the fundamental
properties of the high-altitude and high-latitude ecosystems, we may
gain insights that will allow better detection and evaluation of the
decadal-scale changes that are becoming more apparent in these areas.
