GRID-Arendal is a Norwegian foundation established by the Norwegian
Ministry of Environment to support the United Nations Environment
Programme (UNEP). Their role is to provide decision-makers and the
public with improved access to high-quality environmental information
and to strengthen UNEP in expanding the use of such information for
awareness-raising, policy-making, and action. GRID-Arendal's core
competences are environmental information management tools and
assessment reporting, capacity building, and outreach.
GRID-Arendal is seeking a person to lead its Polar Program and to play a
major role in continuing GRID-Arendal development as UNEP's Key Center
of Polar Environmental Assessment and Early Warning with particular
focus on the Arctic.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the preparation of the
Polar input to UNEP's Global Environment Assessment Reports, represent
UNEP in the Polar regions, and strongly contribute to the development
and implementation of GRID-Arendal's project portfolio. Key partners are
the Arctic Council, Arctic Parliamentarians, Arctic Indigenous Peoples,
and the Arctic Environmental Research Community.
The Head of GRID-Arendal's Polar Program will work closely with the
Management Team in Arendal and UNEP Headquarters in Nairobi. The
position is based in Arendal and will report directly to the Managing
Director. The position will involve considerable international travel.
Required qualifications:
- Academic degree in a relevant science
- Substantial international experience (10+ years in environmental
management/reporting)
- Demonstrated experience in managing projects and a team of people
- Established international Arctic (Polar) network
- Excellent English (oral and written)
- Proven successful fund-raising skills
- High level of productivity (result-oriented)
- Highly motivated to work with polar environment issues and
policy-making
- Innovation and cross-disciplinary skills
