The journal Arctic Anthropology Vol. 41 No. 2 is being published in
honor of Allen P. McCartney, a distinguished Arctic archaeologist and
former editor of the journal, who died in June 2004. McCartney, who was
a professor of Anthropology at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville,
conducted field work in the Aleutian Islands, North Alaska, and the
Canadian Arctic throughout his 42-year career. In addition to producing
detailed archaeology site reports, McCartney wrote about maritime
adaptations, indigenous whaling, analysis of whale bones, Thule
archaeology, prehistoric use of metals, and ethnic boundaries. The 17
papers in this volume, written by some of McCartney's colleagues and
students, comment and build on his broad range of interests. A
bibliography of his work and a photo essay detailing his first year in
the field are included in the volume.
