Session C 05: Uses of Photography in Cryospheric Studies

DESCRIPTION
This session is directed towards understanding the scientific potential
of photography to detect change in the cryosphere, including both
qualitative and quantitative methods. Various photographic methods, most
notably repeat photography, time-lapse photography, aerial
photogrammetry, and high-resolution optical satellite imagery offer us
some of the most captivating and compelling evidence of climate change.
Less well-known techniques, such as terrestrial photogrammetry and
particle image velocimetry (PIV), are also beginning to make significant
contributions. Presentations are therefore sought that illustrate the
uses of any such photography for documentation and analysis of glaciers,
seasonal snow, frozen ground, arctic vegetation, sea ice, and other
cryospheric phenomena. Presentations from data archive centers
specializing in historic photography are also welcome.
Though clearly many research groups are involved with scientifically
oriented photography in some way, there does not yet seem to be an
robust network or community established to facilitate the exchange of
information, techniques, and technology. We hope that this session will
be a step in that direction, and we encourage non-cryospheric
researchers involved in scientific photography to visit our session and
contribute to the discussions.
