As part of the NSERC Metals in the Holistic Environment Research Network
and in association with the Nunavut Research Institute and Ghent
University, the University of Saskatchewan is seeking a mature,
independent student to work in Canada's Arctic.
This student will work closely with a northern Canadian community to
assess fundamental biochemical and environmental processes that alter
metal bioaccessibility in ingested substances. The ideal candidate would
have a strong background at the M.Sc. level in toxicology, microbiology,
or an allied biological discipline and would be interested in obtaining
their Ph.D. in Toxicology at the University of Saskatchewan. Experience
in polar environments would be beneficial but not essential. The student
will be expected to spend at least three months in Canada's north and
spend several months in Belgium working at the Laboratory of Microbial
Ecology and Technology. The remainder of the time would be spent at the
Laboratory of Soil Environmental Toxicology located at the University of
Saskatchewan.
The Toxicology Program at the University of Saskatchewan is the fastest
growing toxicology program in Canada and offers a wide array of
undergraduate and graduate courses in Toxicology. In addition, the
University of Saskatchewan offers competitive graduate stipends. NSERC
supported Ph.D. candidates can expect to receive additional stipend
funds for a combined Ph.D. stipend of $32,500 per year.
Students could start at any time on this project but must be willing to
begin the project by 1 May 2005 at the latest.
