SESSION DESCRIPTION
Because saline lakes are important layover points for migrating
waterfowl, it is of interest to understand their ecology and
biogoechemistry. Saline lakes are unique aquatic ecosystems in that they
often have very high concentrations of dissolved organic matter (DOM).
Few reports have investigated the abiotic and biotic processes
responsible for DOM and POM cycling in these systems. Most saline lakes
are relatively shallow, often high in productivity, and do not fit well
into the trophic paradigms of freshwater lakes. Additionally, they are
situated in arid regions and have high sunlight exposure.
This session will focus on the role of DOM in saline lakes and compares
quantitative and qualitative studies of DOM biogeochemistry. Oral and
poster presentations that present new data and methodologies for
studying saline lake DOM biogeochemistry, as well as consideration of C
and N cycling, are welcomed.
