DESCRIPTION
Many circum-Arctic ice core records detailing environmental change over
a variety of timescales have been collected from the glaciers and ice
caps in the North Atlantic sector. In order to fill a gap in our
understanding of Late Quaternary and Holocene climate and environmental
change in the north Pacific, a series of high resolution ice cores have
recently been recovered from glaciers in the St. Elias mountains in
south western Yukon Territory and southern Alaska. Located in close
proximity to the Gulf of Alaska, these cores are thought to reflect
climate and environmental change in the North Pacific region on
interannuual to millennial timescales. Papers presented in this session
will highlight these new findings and also incorporate new
paleoclimate/paleoenvironmental records derived from (but not limited
to) tree rings, lake sediments, and marine sediments to better document
change in the North Pacific atmosphere and ocean as well as assess the
causes of change and their link to broader scale atmospheric circulation
patterns.
