POSITION DESCRIPTION
This Physical Oceanographer position is a 3-year, fixed term
appointment, ideal for a post-graduate with oceanographic experience.
Following orientation in Cambridge, the successful candidate will join a
ship-based scientific team in Antarctica for 30 days and put their
theory into practice. This team will be among the first to work with the
new CTD and ADCP data. The successful candidate may be able to use this
research to work towards a PhD.

PROJECT INFORMATION
The project goal is to understand the way in which the interaction
between the ice shelves and the ocean is likely to depend on climatic
conditions.

For over a decade now a small group of physical oceanographers and
glaciologists have been studying processes beneath the largest ice
shelf, Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf, which has an area about the size of
France and floats in the southern Weddell Sea. Several different
techniques have been used, including drilling holes through the ice and
deploying instruments in the underlying water column, measuring basal
meltrates using a variety of glaciological tools, and applying
sophisticated numerical models to improve the interpretation of the data
so obtained.

We now plan to use Autosub, the autonomous underwater vehicle developed
by NERC, to gain access to the sub-ice shelf cavity. The datasets will
include acoustical imagery of the ice shelf base, CTD, and ADCP data.
Colleagues from other institutes will be using the vehicle to undertake
water sampling, sea floor photography, and to study the sea ice north of
the ice shelf.

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist in developing mission plans for the Autosub AUI campaign to
Ronne Ice Shelf

  • Participate in the Autosub cruise to Ronne Ice Shelf in 2005

  • Analyze selected datasets from the Autosub cruise and relate them to
    other sub-ice shelf measurements BAS has already made

  • Present findings from the Autosub cruise at international meetings

  • Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals

SALARY
Salary will be in the range of 21,000 USD to 23,600 USD per annum. A
generous benefits package including a pension scheme, flexible working
hours, 25 days annual leave, and 10.5 days public and privilege holiday
is also offered.
