Dear Colleague:
In November 2002, we conducted a workshop at Purdue University aimed at
assessing the state of knowledge about chemical exchange between the
atmosphere and various surfaces in the Arctic Ocean region, and
developing a set of recommendations for future organized collaborative
research. This workshop was made possible by a grant from the US
National Science Foundation and led to recommendation for an
international coordinated research effort, that we have called OASIS
(Ocean-Atmosphere-Sea Ice-Snowpack). A summary of this recommendation
was published last year in EOS (EOS Transactions, Volume 84, 9 September
2003), and subsequently we have proposed to ICSU to undertake the OASIS
study as part of the International Polar Year activities slated for
2007/8.
With help from several people in the international community we have now
produced a first draft of an OASIS Science Plan. At this point in time
we need your help. Our plan for the immediate future is as follows:
(1) We invite and encourage comments, suggestions, and/or help of any
kind on the Science Plan from the international community. That includes
the science, the participants, the infrastructure needs and approaches,
funding opportunities, etc. Please help us with this! You can either
e-mail comments to us, or you can go to the OASIS web site
(http://www.chem.purdue.edu/arctic/OASISHomePage.htm) and download the
Word version, edit that in "Track Changes" mode, and send it to us by
e-mail.
(2) We plan to organize a workshop in late 2004 or early 2005 to work on
the development of an Implementation Plan.
(3) Move forward and do the work!
Your input is encouraged and appreciated. Please forward the Science
Plan to any potentially interested/capable participants, and help
communicate with appropriate Arctic Research organizations that want to,
or should be, participants and/or contributors.
