Stockholm University offers a PhD position in Quaternary Geology within
the topic "Dynamics and Chronology of Ice Sheet Deglaciation in the
Central Fennoscandian Mountain Range" at the Department of Physical
Geography and Quaternary Geology.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Opinions differ regarding the chronology and timing of deglaciation in
the central Fennoscandian mountain range. The objective of this study is
to establish a three-dimensional model of deglaciation for this region
using glacial geological and geomorphological techniques and by
establishing a chronological framework using radiocarbon, luminescence,
or cosmogenic isotope techniques. Results should be contrasted with and
linked to detailed deglaciation histories to the west (Norway) and east
(Baltic). Determining the deglaciation chronology in this area is a key
requirement for our understanding of the dynamics of a melting ice sheet
with both marine and terrestrial margins.

POSITION SPECIFICS
The 4-year PhD program includes roughly 3 years of research and one year
of course work. The position may be extended by up to one year if up to
20% teaching assistance, research, or administration is included in the
contract. The position is financed by a faculty studentship (about 1,826
USD per month during the first 12 months) at Stockholm University. Upon
satisfactory progress, the PhD-student can apply for PhD employment from
the second year with a salary of 2,395 USD per month. Running costs are
paid for by separate grants.

ELIGIBILITY
Candidates must have obtained an MSc or equivalent in Earth Sciences
with emphasis on Quaternary Studies/Quaternary Geology. Preference will
be given to those with experience in the methods mentioned above and
potential/proven ability to publish in English peer-reviewed journals.
Candidates should be available by 1 June 2004, however, an earlier
starting date is negotiable.

APPLICATION DETAILS
