The Russian Academy of Sciences is holding a major conference on
Permafrost and Oil and Gas Extraction on 22-29 May 2004 in Tyumen,
Russia. Tyumen is at the heart of the massive pipeline system of Western
Siberia.
All aspects of oil and gas extraction, pipelines, and other
infrastructure, as well as social, environmental, and industrial views
will be examined.
International participants are invited to attend. The conference will
have two official languages (Russian and English) with simultaneous
translation which is being facilitated by the GSL Network.

- Socioeconomic, cultural, and historical importance of the permafrost
regions.
- Permafrost and frozen ground distribution, temperature, and structure in
oil and gas regions.
- Oil extraction and transportation in the permafrost regions.
- Frozen ground of the Arctic sea shelves. Land-ocean interaction in the
Polar regions.
- Gas hydrates in the permafrost regions.
- Geocryological mapping and geoinformation systems.
- Modern cryogenic processes and formations.
- Stability of engineering constructions. Oil and gas infrastructure.
Construction and maintenance. Monitoring of oil and gas geotechnical
engineering.
- Consequences of oil pollution and environmental protection.
- Prognosis of permafrost dynamics under intensive anthropogenic
disturbance.
- Medical and social aspects of residence in the Northern Regions.
PARTICIPANTS
Permafrost scientists, specialist engineers, geocryologists,
glaciologists, soil scientists, climatologists, biologists, medics,
engineers, and all other interested specialists from Russia and abroad
will all be participating.
