The University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) is offering an
interdisciplinary course on field techniques in sea ice research in
Barrow, Alaska in May 2004. The course will be conducted jointly with
faculty and students from Hokkaido University (HU), Japan. There may be
a limited number of spaces available for students outside of HU and UAF.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This is a course for (advanced) graduate-level students that offers a
practical introduction to the principal field techniques employed in
sea-ice studies of an interdisciplinary (geophysical-biogeochemical)
nature. The course focuses on sea ice as an instructive example of the
close intertwining between ocean, ice, and biosphere processes in the
polar regions and the transdisciplinary importance of the ice cover in
the climate system. After a one-day introductory session in Fairbanks,
students and faculty will spend 7 days in the field. The course is
organized in such a way as to encourage interdisciplinary approaches to
the problems posed, addressing in particular the themes of temporal and
spatial variability of geophysical and biogeochemical variables at
different scales. The course comprises five modules:
(1) Remote sensing of sea ice processes and introduction to sea-ice
modeling
(2) Sea ice thickness and morphology
(3) Sea ice albedo and radiative transfer
(4) Sea-ice primary production and biogeochemistry
(5) Sea-ice meiofauna and ice-ocean interaction
COST OF COURSE
UAF/Hokkaido University students: 750 USD
Graduate students from other universities: 1500 USD
The course fee includes all costs related to the field course including
the return-flight from Fairbanks to Barrow, accommodation, meals, rental
of snow machines and equipment for course purposes. The textbook is also
included in the course fees. UAF/HU tuition fees apply and are not part
of the course fee.
